Kylie Weast

Kylie Weast – Comanche, Okla. ($101,715)
First-time WNFR qualifier

It would be safe to say that barrel racing just runs in the family of Kylie Weast who has qualified for her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Her grandmother, Florence Youree competed at the very first NFR 60 years ago in Dallas. Her mother, Renee Ward, qualified in 1985, the first year that rodeo’s championships were held in Las Vegas. At the time, the Ward’s oldest child Janae was three years old.

Sixteen years later, Janae was among the competitors at the NFR. She qualified three times from 2001 – 2003 earning the gold buckle the last year she was there.

Kylie and her twin sister Cassie were in school, so while Janae and Renee were in Las Vegas, their dad, James Ward, stayed home with them and took care of their business. Now, it’s Kylie’s turn. The twins both had successful stints in high school and college rodeo. They attended Tarleton State University and competed against each other at the College National Finals Rodeo. They stayed involved in their family business of Youree Ward Barrel Horses, who own Hell on the Red, the six-year-old mare that has gotten Kylie to the NFR.

Her year got off to a great start with a second-place finish at Denver. Third at Fort Worth, and the first of March, she was fifth in the world standings. She continued placing and winning checks to the tune of $101,715. She enters the NFR in 7th place.

In between rodeos, Kylie has been training for Namgis Quarter Horses and is having success there as well. And, she and her husband, Jay Weast, have a two-year-old son, Marcus.

When Janae competed at the NFR, Kylie’s dad let the twins stay up past their bedtime to watch her on television. This year the tables have turned, and Janae will be watching as Kylie and Reddy run down the alley at the Thomas and Mack Center. And with this barrel racing dynasty, there could be a big family reunion as well.
