PUEBLO, Colo. – The race to crown the 2016 World Champion Bull is far from over, but with the first half of the Built Ford Tough Series in the rearview mirror, PBR Director of Livestock Cody Lambert has been able to see a variety of bulls try and prove their merits.

Jared Allen’s Air Time is averaging 45.83 points in six Built Ford Tough Series outs this year and appears to be one of the front runners for the 2016 world title.

Air Time is the current holder of the top two bull scores of the season, including an impressive 47.5-point outing in the first-half finale at Last Cowboy Standing when he launched Jess Lockwood in 2.66 seconds. He also bucked off world No. 4 Joao Ricardo Vieira in 2.24 seconds for a 47-point bull score in Phoenix.

So far, Air Time is the only bovine athlete to surpass the 47-point threshold this season.

However, defending World Champion Bull SweetPro’s Long John is by no means laying down in his fight to repeat as champion. In fact, Long John is averaging 45.5 points per out and has a 46.75-point showing for a 7.56-second buckoff of two-time World Champion J.B. Mauney on his resume this season.

There is also SweetPro’s Bruiser, who finished runner-up to Long John last season. Bruiser has averaged 45.28 points this season and is right in the mix as well for a possible run at the championship.

The 2015 ABBI Classic Champion has posted a 46.5-point bull score (4.98 seconds of work against Eduardo Aparecido) and a 46.25-point bull score (5.83-second buckoff of Valdiron de Oliveira) so far this year.

Below is a look at 10 bulls that impressed Lambert during the first half of the season and appear to be poised at making a run at qualifying for the World Championship Bull race at the 2016 Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Nov. 2-7.

Jared Allen’s Air Time

BFTS Outs: 6

BFTS Ridden: 0

BFTS Average Bull Score: 45.83 points

Lambert:  “Air Time is kind of filling Bushwacker’s shoes right now. He is doing some amazing stuff. He has finally got to where he is not so nervous inside the chute. He stands there and gets out clean. The only knock on him before was he either hurt himself in the chute or he couldn’t get out clean. Now, he is seasoned just enough that I see big things out of him and it is going to take one of those great riders to ride him, and when they do it will be something very special.”

SweetPro’s Long John

BFTS Outs: 6

BFTS Ridden: 1

BFTS Average Bull Score: 45.5 points

Lambert: “He is the reigning World Champion. He is really strong. He is probably as athletic as Air Time, but he has a style of bucking that makes him incredibly strong and he does everything right. He is really honest about it, but if you get in a wrong position you can be in a dangerous place on him because he can jerk you down.”

Big Cat

BFTS Outs: 8

BFTS Ridden: 0

BFTS Average Bull Score: 43.44 points

Lambert: “Big Cat is 1,900 pounds and he is named appropriately. He has a lot of passion, but he has the moves and speed of a smaller bull. He don’t care if he spins to the right or the left, but it is going to be close to the bucking chutes. He has a good amount of kick, but you haven’t seen everything he has yet.”

SweetPro’s Bruiser

BFTS Outs: 8

BFTS Ridden: 1

BFTS Average Bull Score: 45.28

Lambert: “Bruiser has perfect timing and is also smooth. He is bucking so hard and in the air so high, and so fast, as he is spinning that he is a little tougher to ride than most bulls. But his timing is good and he has such a rhythm to him that I expect the great riders to be able to ride him.”

Pearl Harbor

BFTS Outs: 6

BFTS Ridden: 1

BFTS Average Bull Score: 45 points

Lambert: “J.B. Mauney is the only one to have ridden him this year in Sioux Falls for 94.25 points. Pearl Harbor doesn’t care if he spins to the left or right. He has lot of kick and lots of whip to the outside. He has decent timing, but he bucks so hard that it is going to take those kind of riders to ride him.”

Crossfire

BFTS Outs: 12

BFTS Ridden: 1

BFTS Average Bull Score: 44.41 points

Lambert: “Crossfire likes to spin to the right and he is strong. He reminds me of Shepherd Hills Tested with how big and strong he is. He is also one of the old school-type of bulls that if you mess around in the chute he will make you pay before the gate opens. He stands pretty good, but if you don’t take your shot then he will take his shot at you.”

Cochise

BFTS Outs: 10

BFTS Ridden: 1

BFTS Average Bull Score: 44.45 points

Lambert: “Cochise is really strong out of the chute. He is a big bull and has that long strong jump right out of the chute. Once he gets out there, he should spin to the left and have decent timing; but he is a big, long, strong bull that has lots of whip to the outside. He just keeps getting it done. He was a good bull last year and he is even better this year.”

Magic Train

BFTS Outs: 7

BFTS Ridden: 0

BFTS Average Bull Score: 44.25 points

Lambert: “Magic Train is a really good bull. I am surprised they don’t ride him. He goes up and down and, to me, he should feel pretty good. What he will do is jump out of the spin after he has made a turn and will go again.”

Wicked

BFTS Outs: 7

BFTS Ridden: 2

BFTS Average Bull Score: 43.93 points

Lambert: “Wicked is really good. When guys ride him, (judges) don’t score him as high as other bulls. To me, Wicked would be a little higher on the list, he would be up there with Cochise, if he scored as high. For some reason, it takes an almost perfect effort to rid him and the guys that ride him make him a look a little easier than it really is.”

Beaver Creek Beau

BFTS Outs: 12

BFTS Ridden: 0

BFTS Average Bull Score: 43.75 points

Lambert: “Beaver Creek Beau has just been getting it done all year. He does the same thing every single time. Two jumps and spins to the right. He is very strong. If you are in the inside, he will drop you to the inside. If you are on the outside, he will swing you to the outside. He hasn’t been ridden all year and they should be right around 90 when they do ride him. I don’t think he is a contender for a World Championship, but he is a championship round bull that is tough to ride.”
