2016 Clem McSpadden NFSR Set to Kick Off

by Justin Shaw | Nov 11, 2016

MULVANE, Kan. – The Clem McSpadden National Finals Steer Roping begins Nov. 11, as the top 15 steer ropers in the world battle for a prize pool of $425,000 at the Kansas Star Arena.

Action begins at 7:30 p.m. (CT) Nov. 11-12, with five rounds taking place each night.

Rocky Patterson enters his 20th-consecutive – and 22nd overall – NFSR as the regular-season world standings leader with $84,917.

The 50-year-old native of Pratt, Kan., is looking for his fourth gold buckle, having won the world title in 2009-10, and 2012.

Aboard his new horse, 12-year-old Buster, Patterson took the title and earned a total of $20,288 at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo Feb. 28. He also made lucrative trips to the pay window in Dodge City, Kan. ($6,283), Sheridan, Wyo., ($5,977), Cheyenne, Wyo., ($5,959) and Baker, Mont., ($4,263).

Chet Herren of Pawhuska, Okla., sits second in the world with $69,436, while Jason Evans, J. Tom Fisher and Cody Lee round out the top five.

However, Patterson’s lead is far from safe, as each round win pays $9,155, and the winner of the 10-head average will earn $27,347.

The 2016 field also includes the greatest steer roper of all-time, 18-time World Champion Guy Allen. The 58-year-old native of Santa Anna, Texas, qualified for 32 consecutive NFSRs from 1977-2008, and makes his first trip back since.

The only first timer in the field is 56-year-old Chris Glover from Keenesburg, Colo., who enters Mulvane 12th in the world.

Tickets start at $25, and are available at www.kansasstarcasino.com.
