Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Winding Down

FORT WORTH, Texas — With just three performances left before Saturday night’s Championship Finals at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo, competition is winding down.

Contestants are leaving with empty pockets or hoping to get a chance to add their names to the history books here. Fort Worth’s rodeo is not only legendary, it is lucrative as well. This year’s rodeo will payout $645,000.

Nine world champions are planning their trip back here to compete for a Fort Worth buckle. In the bareback riding, Tim O’Connell moved into fourth place in the overall standings after scoring 81.5 points at the Thursday matinee. He has a total of 247 points on three rides. O’Connell, from Zwingle, Iowa has won this rodeo the past two years on the way to winning two world championships.

Kaycee Feild, from Spanish Fork, Utah is also in the bareback riding so far. He is ninth with 241.5 points. Feild is a four-time world champion and has earned the buckle here twice.

Tyler Pearson from Louisville, Mississippi, earned the gold buckle in the steer wrestling last December in Las Vegas at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Pearson has kept his momentum going and is leading the overall standings here. He has a half-second lead over the rest of the field with a time of 8.5 seconds on two head.

Shane Hanchey, from Sulphur, Louisiana, won the tie-down roping at this rodeo in 2010. Three years later, he earned the gold buckle. Shane is coming off a win at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo in Denver. Riding his horse “Bam Bam,” he is sixth overall with a total time of 19.5 seconds. Scott Kormos from Teague, Texas leads with 16.7.

Ten years ago, Matt Sherwood from Pima, Ariz., won the team roping in the Will Rogers Coliseum roping with Randon Adams. This year, Sherwood is heading for Walt Woodard, who lives at Stephenville. These men have each won two world championships. Clay O’Brien Cooper is a team roping legend after winning seven world titles. The Gardnerville, Nevada resident is heeling here for Derrick Begay from Seba Dalkai, Arizona. They are eighth and hoping to remain among the top 12 who qualify for the finals.

Two world champions are among the top 12 saddle bronc riders here. Jacobs Crawley, from Boerne, Texas, is in fourth and Jesse Wright from Milford, Utah is in tenth.

Barrel racing phenom, Hailey Kinsel, from Cotulla, Texas, took the lead here on Thursday night. She and her great mare “Sister” stopped the clock in 16.29 to move into second in the round two and take the overall lead. Her total time of 32.86 is now the one to beat.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues its 100th-anniversary edition Friday with performances at 2 and 7:30 p.m., in the historic Will Rogers Coliseum.
