About-face! Calgary Stampede Parade to Change Direction

Calgary – Same great Parade, new direction! The Calgary Stampede is excited to announce a change to the annual Parade which will see the marching bands, floats and horses travelling in the opposite direction from previous years.

“We love to see Calgarians celebrate the start of Stampede along the Parade route, and we want to make it easier for them to continue the fun just a few blocks away at Stampede Park,” says Calgary Stampede president & chairman of the board, Dave Sibbald. In 2017, riders will mount up and bands will strike their first chords at the intersection of 9th Avenue and 1st Street S.E. The Parade will then travel along the route to the end point of 6th Avenue and 3rd Street S.E.

“By changing the direction, we’re opening up a path to allow for much easier movement toward Stampede Park once the Parade has passed,” says Sibbald. Free admission to Stampede Park is also being offered on July 7 until 1:30 p.m. for those looking to cowboy-up and keep on Stampeding.

This change to the Parade is more than 3 years in the making. The Parade committee, consisting of 150 full-time volunteers, has been considering adjustments since 2013. “We feel this new route has a lot of benefits,” says Calgary Stampede Parade committee chair, Michael Wetherup. “It addresses the ever-changing face of the East Village, in addition to making it easier for Parade-goers to get to Stampede Park.”

“The Stampede Parade is a special part of Calgary’s cultural identity and is the event which signals the start of the 10 day celebration”, says Susan Veres, senior vice president, strategy & business development at Calgary Municipal Land Corporation. “For decades, the Parade has staged itself in East Village and now as the community hits its peak development timeline, this change to the route will help reduce the impact to our new and existing residential base”.

The Calgary Stampede Parade takes place Friday, July 7, 2017. Free admission to Stampede Park will be offered between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. We encourage you to scout out a spot, break in your boots and join us in July!
