Alves Remains Perfect, Sits within Striking Distance of World Lead

LAS VEGAS – Two-time World Champion Silvano Alves posted 86.25 points on Freakster Saturday to move to the event lead at the Built Ford Tough World Finals, as the only rider to have covered all four of his bulls. The current No. 2 rider in the world, Alves closed the gap on standings leader Joao Ricardo Vieira, moving to within 534.69 points.

Having just watched Alves post a score, Vieira slapped Karaoke at 6.10 seconds and now sits seventh in the event average. The World Finals concludes Sunday with Rounds 5 and the Built Ford Tough Championship Round, beginning at 1 p.m. PT. The action can be seen live from the Thomas & Mack Center on CBS Sports Network at 4 p.m. ET.

“Thank God I’ve been healthy,” Alves said with the help of a translator. “I always stay concentrated on what I have to do to ride, and thank God it’s worked out so far.”

Defending World Champion J.B. Mauney won his second consecutive round with a 93.25-point effort on Bruiser. The North Carolina native currently sits second in the event with 271.5 points, having ridden three of his four bulls in Las Vegas. Mauney’s effort on Saturday marked the top scored-ride on the Built Ford Tough Series since he covered Smackdownfor 93.75 points at the 2013 World Finals.

Matt Triplett posted the second-best ride in Round 4 with 89 points on Delco, moving him to third in the event with a combined 268.25 points. The Montana native has gone 3-for-4 this week.

Finishing third in the round was Tanner Byrne, who is battling neck-and-neck with Gage Gay for this year’s Rookie of the Year title. Byrne put up 87.75 points on Jo Jo to move to fifth in the event average with 260.25 points, having covered three of four bulls. Gay has posted just one score this week and currently sits 16th in the event average.

“It feels awesome,” Byrne said of his Finals success. “Just making the World Finals was my goal at the start of the year, considering I wasn’t on tour. I knew it was awesome to make (the Finals), but I wasn’t going to settle for that. I want to be a Champion. I’ve always said I do better when the lights are on and there is a lot of pressure on the line.”

With an 87.25-point effort on More Big Bucks in Round 4, Ryan Dirteater finished fourth in the round and currently sits fourth in the Finals event average with 260.25 points. Dirteater has covered three of the four bulls he has faced this week.

Long John was the top-marked bull of Round 4, posting a bull score of 47.25 in dumping four-time PRCA champion J.W. Harris in 3.7 seconds. The mark is the top bull score for the event, and is just the fourth bull score of 47 points or higher recorded on the BFTS this season. With the effort, Long John earned the ABBI Classic Championship title.

The race for World Champion will be determined on Sunday. The bull rider who earns the most points during the 2014 season will earn the title, receiving the coveted World Championship belt buckle and a $1 million bonus. Sunday’s championship round will also mark last appearance of two-time PBR World Champion bull Bushwacker (Julio Moreno Bucking Bulls).
