Barrel Racer Buying Real Estate at Caldwell Night Rodeo

Barrel racer buying real estate at Caldwell Night Rodeo 300x240

CALDWELL, Idaho — Nancy Hunter might not be an official land owner here in Caldwell, Idaho, but she and her horse Flit N Fuzz definitely own a piece of the Caldwell Night Rodeo arena.

Hunter and Fuzz have won the rodeo here four out of the last five years. An overturned barrel in 2013 kept them from a perfect record. The Neola, Utah, cowgirl stopped the clock in 17.40 seconds in the first round and won $314 last Tuesday. She came back to the rodeo Friday night and now has the fastest run of the rodeo here so far at 17.13 seconds.

This gave her the second round win, an additional $1,882 and put’s her in contention for another championship. She is currently in second place in the overall standings with a total time of 34.53 seconds behind Jill Welsh who also competed here Friday.

Welsh, a two-time cancer survivor from Parker, Ariz., has a total time of 34.46 seconds. She placed third in the first round with a 17.25 then came back Friday and stopped the clock in 17.21 seconds. That put her second in round and got her a check for $1,614.

Hunter is currently 7th in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association world standings. Welsh is 11th. There is a real possibility that fans will be able to watch both of these women at the upcoming Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in December in Las Vegas.

Four-time world champion bareback rider Kaycee Feild qualified for Saturday night’s championship round by virtue of his 81-point ride on Friday. Feild who is fourth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings qualified for the finals here in fifth place. He won this rodeo in 2012 and would like to add another title to his lengthy rodeo resume.

There will be two Wrights representing the Milford, Utah, bronc riding family in the final round. Rusty Wright, son of world champion Cody Wright and his uncle Jesse Wright, who has also won a world title, are tied for ninth place.

The high-marked ride on Friday went to the 2014 college all-around champion Taygen Schuelke from Newell, S.D. Schuelke had an 82 on Powder River Rodeo’s Dragon to finish in a tie for third place. Schuelke is tied with Beaver, Utah’s CoBurn Bradshaw, who is married to a sister of the Wrights.

Adam Gray is the new leader in the tie-down roping. Gray was just out of the money in the first round, came back and stopped the clock in 8.0 seconds to tie for fourth in the second round on Friday night. He now has a total of 16.3 seconds on two runs and is looking for his first Caldwell Night Rodeo championship. Gray if 15th in the world standings and needs every penny he can get to secure his fifth NFR qualification.

There will be more junior rodeo in the arena on Saturday starting at 6:30 p.m. That will be followed with the professional rodeo at 8 p.m. where champions in all of the events will be determined.
