Boyington Named 2015 Zoetis PRCA Veterinarian of the Year

by Justin Shaw | Oct 09, 2015

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – For his dedication and service to rodeo livestock, Dr. John Boyington has been selected as the 2015 Zoetis PRCA Veterinarian of the Year.

For the last 25 years, Dr. Boyington has served as the on-site veterinarian for Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo in Phillipsburg, Kan. As a contestant in 1978, Dr. Boyington won the Phillipsburg Rodeo steer wrestling title, only to put his rodeo career on hold to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Dr. Boyington continually demonstrates his commitment to rodeo livestock by going above and beyond the call to provide veterinary care.

Nomination letters received on behalf of Dr. Boyington included Kansas’ Biggest Rodeo Vice President J.D. Shelton, Phillipsburg City Mayor Fred E. Robinson, PRCA Stock Contractor Rhett Beutler and rodeo contestants. These letters spoke of Dr. Boyington’s commitment to the sport of rodeo, dedication to the welfare and treatment of rodeo livestock and his community involvement. Boyington will be honored at the PRCA Contract Personnel Banquet Dec. 2 at The South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas, Nev.

Other finalists for the 2015 award included Dr. Tony Scheiber of Cody, Wyo.; Dr. Jerry Billquist of Boerne, Texas; Dr. Marty Dean Tanner of Elgin, Texas; and Dr. Rett Scoggin of Belle Fourche, S.D.

The Zoetis PRCA Veterinarian of the Year Award was created in 2010 to recognize the dedication of veterinarians across the country to the health and welfare of rodeo livestock. Nominations are submitted by PRCA members and PRCA rodeo committees. The selection committee reviews those nominations for specific contributions to the health and welfare of rodeo livestock, extent of involvement in the sport of rodeo and community involvement.

Past winners of the 2015 PRCA Veterinarian of the Year Award include: Dr. William Anderson, Fort Worth, Texas, 2010; Dr. Garth Lamb, Las Vegas, Nev., 2011; Dr. Jake Wells, San Antonio, Texas, 2012; Dr. Joe Coli, Reno, Nev., 2013 and Dr. J. Fred Rule, Elk City, Okla., 2014.
