Brazile in Contention for Fourth Cody Stampede Title

CODY, Wyo.; — The Cody Stampede rodeo is one that Trevor Brazile tries really hard to get to over the Fourth-of-July “Cowboy Christmas” run.

There’s a pretty good reason for that. Brazile seems to do well in the arena at Stampede Park and Friday night was no exception. He and team roping partner Patrick Smith were the last team ropers to compete and had the second fastest time of the night at 4.5 seconds.

Brazile came back to the tie-down roping and was again the last competitor of the night. He had the fastest time of the performance at 8.8 seconds. He is now fourth in the standings in both of those events and is the most likely candidate to win the all-around title here. He has won it three times before, in 2005, 2009 and 2010.

“I’ve learned that you don’t have to win first to get a pay check, especially here,” Brazile said. “I love this rodeo and always try to get here. It’s a beautiful setting and if we are lucky enough to be here for a day, there is a lot to do.”

The Brazile family made a trip to the Buffalo Bill Center of the West which features five different museums all in one place.

The fast time of the night in team roping went to Shawn Bird from Cut Bank, Mont., and Justin Viles who calls Cody home. This is a second home to Bird who attends school in nearby Powell at Northwest College. They are no strangers to the Cody Night Rodeo and that experience served them well as they stopped the clock in 4.4 seconds – currently third.

There is a new leader in the bull riding and he is looking forward to getting his second paycheck out of Cody. Shane Proctor won the Cody/Yellowstone Xtreme Bulls competition on Tuesday, then came back and rode Frontier Rodeo’s County Sheriff on Friday. His score of 86 puts him in the lead with just one more performance left. Proctor won the Xtreme Bulls and the rodeo here in 2012, the same year he won the world championship. Proctor also attended Northwest College and has a lot of friends and fans here.

The fourth performance of the 96th annual Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede gets underway at 5 p.m. on Saturday. For tickets and more information go to www.codystampederodeo.com.
