Bull Rider Trey Kimzey Wins in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Bull rider Trey Kimzey is on his PRCA permit for the second year and is having an outstanding season.

The Strong City, Okla., cowboy continued that trend by winning the New Mexico State Fair & Rodeo, which concluded Sunday.

Kimzey won the title with an 89.5-point ride on Hi Lo Pro Rodeo’s 20 To Life.

“I’ve seen a couple of videos of that bull, and I saw Parker Breding win the RAM (National Circuit) Finals (last April) on him down there,” said Kimzey, 19. “He was really good down there (in Kissimmee, Fla.), and I watched that video. I was really excited to have him.”

The ride lived up to the hype for Kimzey, who is the brother of Sage Kimzey, the reigning PRCA four-time bull riding world champion.

“He’s a really good bull,” Trey Kimzey said. “If you stub your toe, he will throw you off. He was right there in the gate to the left, kicking and spinning. He was away from my hand and kind of got me tipped up to the outside just a little bit at one point, but I made a little move and got back over there and finished it off. By the roar of the crowd and all my buddies cheering, I knew I made a good ride. I was excited.”

For his win, Kimzey earned $5,283 for his eight-second performance. Kimzey entered Sunday in first place in the bull riding PRCA | RAM Permit Standings with $44,539. Stetson Wright was in second place with $39,490.

It appears Trey Kimzey, after his win in Albuquerque, will break the PRCA record for most money won on a permit in a single season. The permit record is held by Sage Kimzey, who earned $47,726 in 2013.

“He broke the permit record back in 2013, and hopefully I can beat his record,” Trey said. “My plan is to get my (PRCA card), and I will jump in the rig with him or some other NFR-caliber guys. I plan on making the NFR.”

Kimzey is ready to see what he can do against the best PRCA bull riders, and his brother is tops on that list.

“Everybody knows Sage is one of the best bull riders in the world, and I’m super proud of him,” Trey said. “But I’m trying to make my own legacy and just work off that. He has his goals and I have mine, and we want to help each other achieve them. It’s cool to have a brother going up and down the road who you can look at and ask for advice about anything – entering, bulls, anything. It is just really cool.”

As good as Trey’s ride was in the Duke City, it wasn’t his highest-scored ride of the season. He had a 90-point ride on United Pro Rodeo’s Diamond Cutter to capture the title at the Eureka (Kan.) PRCA Rodeo, Aug. 18.

“I’ve grown up around Pro Rodeo,” Trey said. “I’ve lived the lifestyle, and this is all I have ever wanted to do.”

Other winners at the $165,845 rodeo were all-around cowboy Steven Dent ($3,400, bareback riding and saddle bronc riding), bareback rider Bill Tutor (91.5 points on Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Top Flight); steer wrestler J.D. Struxness (8.4 seconds on two head); team ropers Derrick Begay/Rich Skelton (4.0 seconds); saddle bronc rider Leon Fountain (86.5 points on Hi Lo Pro Rodeo’s Dancing Girl); tie-down roper Cimarron Boardman (17.7 seconds on two head) and barrel racer Lela Pluemer (15.11 seconds).
