Calgary Stampede Showband Captures Gold Medal with Distinction at World Music Contest

Calgary – The Calgary Stampede Showband returns home today from the World Music Contest in Kerkrade, Netherlands with a gold medal with distinction, placing in the top eight in the World Showband division. The band proudly performed their 2017 production, Mosaic, to a live audience of 20,000 at the prestigious competition July 30, 2017.

“We are proud of our young performers that represented the Calgary Stampede and brought Mosaic to a large international audience,” says Ryan Hancock, band director, Calgary Stampede Showband. “We were grateful to have the opportunity to share and celebrate Calgary’s western and indigenous heritage, culture and community spirit with the world.”

Mosaic is a special collaboration between the Calgary Stampede Showband and the Calgary Stampede Indian Events committee and was created with the support of local historians and Indigenous leaders. The unique performance features Indigenous youth drummers, singers, and dancers, blending their talents with the percussion, woodwinds and brass of the Calgary Stampede Showband.
