Champions Crowned at 19th Annual Calgary Stampede 4-H Rodeo

Calgary – It was a weekend of rodeo competition Morgan Burgermeister will remember for the rest of her life. The 15 year old from Hanna, Alberta emerged from the 19th annual Calgary Stampede 4-H Rodeo with one of the much coveted championship belt buckles, the Reserve High Point title, and a lot of great memories.

“It’s hard to pick just one highlight,” said Burgermeister, who was taking part in the event for the first time. “It was fun, busy, and great to be with friends.” The passionate 4-H member was one of more than 75 young rodeo competitors from 30 4-H clubs to take part in the popular competition. Most were from Alberta, with several also making the trip from Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

Held in the Calgary Stampede’s Agrium Western Event Centre, the competition began Friday, August 19, with a brand new event. Designed to showcase the skills of both horse and rider, the Jeopardy Obstacle Challenge definitely put those pairings to the test, but also offered the 4-H members a fun and unique way to kick off the weekend.

Rodeo action on both Saturday and Sunday saw the stars of tomorrow go head-to-head in a variety of riding and roping events. Many, including Morgan Burgermeister, came away with some valuable hardware.

“It’s very special, it wasn’t expecting it,” she said about being awarded a Calgary Stampede buckle for the fastest time in Senior Goat Tying, adding the clinics offered throughout the weekend on proper rodeo and animal care techniques helped her hone her skills in a number of areas.

“For sure, it was really helpful. They answered all your questions, helped if you needed help.” Burgermeister says it was also a great opportunity to meet and get to know 4-H members from other clubs. “It was nice, they were all really friendly.”

Emily Morgan of High River captured the Intermediate High Point Championship, with Jessica Lundstrom of Okotoks earning the Reserve title. In the Junior division, Brook Baehl of Okotoks was the best-of-the-best with Faythe Bergen of Aldersyde a close second. Burgermeister was edged out of the top spot for High Point Champion in the Senior Division by Brooklyn Wipf of De Winton, Alberta. Asked if she’s planning to come back for another shot at the championship next year, her answer was an enthusiastic “I think it would be fun!”
