Checks Adding Up at Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

FORT WORTH, Texas — For the past 100 years, the rodeo has been a centerpiece of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. It is also a very important stop for rodeo contestants trying to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo where world champions are crowned.

There is nearly $645,000 up for grabs here and at the end of Friday night’s rodeo, several cowboys were able to cash in. Among those was Kash Wilson from Gooding, Idaho who scored 86 in the bareback riding on Rafter G Rodeo’s horse named Southwest.

That put Wilson in a tie for first place in the second round with Tim O’Connell from Zwingle, Iowa, a two-time winner here and two-time world champion. They each collected $2,699.

Wilson was 72.5 points here on Thursday night. His efforts Friday night have him in position to qualify for Saturday night’s Championship Finals. He will get on his third bareback horse at the matinee hoping to get enough points to move among the top 12 who ride again.

The first round of bareback riding was also completed Friday afternoon. J.R. Vezain, who competed here nearly a week ago, held onto the first-place position. He earned $3,056 with an 88.5-point ride on J Bar J Rodeo’s Painted Brush.

The first rounds of team roping, saddle bronc riding and bull riding were also completed on Friday. Rusty Wright is trying to be the third member of his family to earn a championship here. The Wrights have brought fame to Milford, Utah as the first family of saddle bronc riding. Rusty Wright’s father Cody was the champion here in 2013 and 2014. His uncle Jake Wright won it in 2016 and 2017.

Rusty won the first round here with an 87-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s horse named Tiger Lily. That was worth $4,776. He is currently second overall and is hoping to leave here with his first championship buckle.

In the team roping, Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifiers Cody Snow and Wesley Thorp are the big money winners here so far. With Snow heading and Thorp heeling, they stopped the clock in 4.1 seconds. That gave them the win by half a second and netted them each $5,043. Thorp is a two-time college rodeo champion from Throckmorton, Texas. Snow calls Los Olivos, California, home.

Texans Elliot Jacoby and Jeff Askey tied for the first-round bull riding win with 88.5 points to earn $4,803 each. Jacoby, from Fredericksburg, rode Silver Creek Rodeo Company’s bull named Sudden Debt. Aksey, from Athens, was successful on Blitzkreig Bop from Rafter G Rodeo. Neither of these men rode their bulls in the first round. However, they could potentially compete again in the finals by virtue of their second-round success.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® will conclude Saturday in the historic Will Rogers Coliseum. The Saturday matinee will determine the remaining preliminary round winners and who qualifies for the Championship Finals on Saturday night. The matinee begins at 2 p.m. and the final performance will start at 7:30 p.m.
