DENVER – Tyler Corrington is on pace to do something he has never done before – win a saddle bronc riding championship at the National Western Stock Show Rodeo.

Corrington is the early leader in the first and second rounds as well as in the overall standings. He rode Calgary Stampede’s Sergeant Whitney during the first performance of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association sanctioned rodeo here on Jan. 16.

That ride netted him an 83-point score. He then came back that night for his second round where he scored 81 points on another horse from Calgary, Uvid Bubbles. That put him in a tie for first place with Hardy Braden from Welch, Okla., who rode Burch Rodeo’s Iron Maiden.

While it is early in the rodeo with 16 performances left before the championship finals on Jan. 25, Corrington’s 164 on two is very likely to be among the top 12 contestants who advance.

The Hastings, Minn., resident is coming off of his third Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification in four years. He finished the 2014 season in 12th place and is hoping this season will see him make the trip back to Las Vegas next December for his fourth WNFR. A win here would certainly help him do that.

World champions and WNFR qualifiers are dominating the steer wrestling here so far. Clayton Hass from Terrell, Texas, qualified for his first WNFR last year and leads the event with a 4.5 second run. He is followed by one of the most consistent steer wrestlers in the sport, Trevor Knowles from Mount Vernon, Ore., who has competed at the WNFR 11 consecutive times.

Tied for third place is Blake Knowles, from Heppner, Ore., a two-time WNFR qualifier who is Trevor’s cousin, and Hunter Cure, the 2013 world champion who lives in Holliday, Texas. They each stopped the clock in 4.7 seconds.

All of the steer wrestlers will make their second appearance in the Denver Coliseum on Jan. 17. There are three performances of the rodeo Saturday, at 11 a.m., 3:30 and 8 p.m. (MT).
