FORT WORTH, Texas — It was a good night for saddle bronc riding brothers Jacobs and Sterling Crawley at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo on Thursday.

Sterling had the high marked ride of the two at 83.5 points. This is currently third in the first round. His success came aboard Rafter G Rodeo’s horse named Sundance. Jacobs scored 79.5 points on another horse from the Gay’s Rafter G Rodeo named Glitter Gulch. While this won’t get him any money in the round it still puts him in position to qualify for Saturday night’s championship finals.

The brothers will ride their second horses here Friday afternoon and are hoping for high enough scores to move them into the top 12 in the overall standings. They both are natives of north Texas having been born in Ennis and raised in Stephenville.

Jacobs has had more success in the rodeo arena than his younger brother and was crowned the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world champion last December. The five-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier also earned the honor of being the best saddle bronc rider in college rodeo in 2011.

Sterling has made the trip to Las Vegas to compete with his brother twice, in 2012 and 2013. He had to settle for being a spectator the last two years. Both brothers want to change that this year and be part of the arena action in the Thomas and Mack Center together next year, just like they are competing here.

“We grew up coming to this rodeo,” Sterling said. “I remember being in high school and coming to the stock show with friends that were showing here. We had some buddies at the rodeo and we were always looking for a way to get in.”
Jacobs now lives in Boerne with his wife Lauren. Sterling is still in Stephenville. The duo travel together and compete against each other on a regular basis. And, they can turn anything into a contest, from singing around a campfire to playing cards and of course getting on bucking horses.

The second round of barrel racing is more than half-way over with 40 of the 70 members of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association having made their second run. Andrea Busby from Brock has the lead in the second round with a 16.69-second time riding her great horse Kellie’s Chick that she calls Sky. She is third in the overall standings with a total time of 33.56.

Kimmie Wall from Roosevelt, Utah, took the overall lead with a total time of 33.53. She is second in the round, just one one-hundredth of a second behind Busby. Second overall is another north Texas resident, Tiany Schuster who makes her home at Krum. Schuster has a total time of 33.54 and made her second appearance here at the Thursday matinee performance.

There are just three performances left before Saturday night’s finals with many of the fast times in the first round of barrel racing left to compete. These leads are far from safe and barrel racers along with other contestants are going to be checking the standings often to see if they have a chance to add their names to the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo history books.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo continues Friday with performances at 2 and 7:30 p.m. in Fort Worth’s historic Will Rogers Coliseum.
