Cress, Clements Take Overall Leads at Fort Worth Rodeo

by Johna Cravens
for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

FORT WORTH, Texas — Sunday’s action at the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® brought new leaders in bareback and saddle bronc riding and paid out more than $12,000 to winners in the first round of steer wrestling.

Bareback rider Mason Clements of Springville, Utah, qualified for his first National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in December where he won more than $80,000 and finished the season ranked 10th. He’s had a slow start to the 2018 season, but that may be changing. After scoring 80 on his first-round horse Saturday night, Clements made a splash on Sunday. In the afternoon matinee, he rode J Bar J Rodeo’s Live Bunny for 85 points and a tie for the second-round lead. He came back Sunday night with an even-better ride – 89 points on United Pro Rodeo’s Jungle Cat to take both the third-round lead and the overall number one spot by 13 points.

Clements, an outdoorsman who keeps a rugged CrossFit training schedule, has also competed in motocross for many years. He should be among the top 12 who will compete here February 3 in the championship round.

Another cowboy who qualified for his first NFR in December, saddle bronc rider Brody Cress of Hillsdale, Wyo., also took the lead at Fort Worth on Sunday. Cress, who finished 2017 as the reserve world champion won more than $176,000 at the NFR.

He scored 86.5 points on J Bar J Rodeo’s Faded Charm Sunday afternoon to edge into the first-round lead by half a point. Cress, who was an ag business major at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, returned on Sunday night and scored 84 points on United Pro Rodeo’s Ropin Dreams. That was enough to put him in third place in the second round and give him a 7-point overall lead.

Jacob Talley of Keatchie, La., was Sunday’s biggest winner at the rodeo. When the first round of steer wrestling concluded Sunday night, he earned $5,679 for the time of 3.9 seconds he clocked earlier this week. Talley will return to Fort Worth to compete in the second round on Friday.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues its 100th anniversary run Monday at 7:30 p.m. at Fort Worth’s historic Will Rogers Coliseum.
