Derek Kolbaba Wins First Round at PBR’s Bad Boy Mowdown in Arkansas

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Washington cowboy Derek Kolbaba brought the crowd in Verizon Arena to its feet when he won Round 1 of the 25th PBR: Unleash The Beast, Bad Boy Mowdown with his 89-point ride.

The Walla Walla native rode Bottoms Up (K-C Bucking Bulls/TCB Ranch) for the required 8 seconds, but he injured his right knee as he dismounted the chocolate brown bovine and was immediately helped from the dirt and back to sports medicine. It was reported he sustained a right knee injury and will have to undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the full extent of the damage.

With the round win, Kolbaba netted 100 world points and $3,632.86. Kolbaba, who currently sits at No. 8 in the PBR world standings, trails No. 1 Ramon de Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) by 930 points.

Emilio Resende (Santa Helena Do Goias, Brazil) reached 8 seconds aboard Little Texas (Broken Arrow Bucking Bulls/6-C) for 88.25 points to finish second in the round. Resende took over the lead in the round five rides before Kolbaba rode, securing the Brazilian 60 points toward the world standings along with $2,802.86.

Reigning PBR World Champion Jess Lockwood (Volborg, Montana) tied for third place with Cody Campbell (Summerville, Oregon) after each recorded 87-point rides. Lockwood rode Wild Onion (Andrews Rodeo Co.), while Campbell outlasted Clover Mountain Beau (J&C Cattle Company). They each picked up 45 points toward the world standings along with $1,702.86.

The No. 3 bull rider in the world, Luciano De Castro (Guzolandia, Brazil), finished in fifth place after his own 85.25-point ride on Reckless Red (5S Ranch). He netted 30 world points along with $902.86.

Round 1 was also an ABBI (American Bucking Bull, Inc.) Classic event, a competition for 3- and 4-year old bucking bulls. Big Black (K-C Bucking Bulls/Joe & Nina Webb) and D&H Cattle/Buck Cattle’s Mind Freak split the Classic Round win with 89.6 points apiece, while taking home more than $8,300 each. This was Big Black’s second Classic Round victory.

Mo Money (Andrews Rodeo Company) placed third with an 87.6-point performance for a $4,517.60 payout. Night Sweats (Plummer/Hart Cattle Co) earned $3,822.50 for fourth place with 87.2 points, while Joker’s Wild(01 Cattle Co/Robbie Schroeder) rounded out the Top 5 with 87 points for a $3,127.50 check.

More than $35,000 was paid out to the Stock Contractors.

The best bull riders in the world will return to Verizon Arena one more time for the conclusion of the Bad Boy Mowdown on Saturday night. Each rider will face one more bull in Round 2 before the Top 15 move on to the championship round where the winner be crowned.

Round 2 will begin on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. The final round from Little Rock will air on CBS Sports Network on Sunday, March 4 at 8 p.m. ET.

Fans will also be able to watch the action in its entirety on RidePass.com or via the RidePass mobile app. Action from Round 1 will be viewable starting at 8 a.m. ET on Saturday, March 3. Round 2 and the Championship Round is available as a Listen Live broadcast starting at 7:30 p.m. ET before fans can watch the CBS Sports Network broadcast as a reair on Sunday, March 4 at 8 a.m. ET.
