Eaves and Smith Looking for Caldwell Night Rodeo Title

By Susan Kanode for the Caldwell Night Rodeo

CALDWELL, Idaho – Team roping fans got to see the best team at the Caldwell Night Rodeo so far when Clay Smith and Paul Eaves competed on Wednesday night.

With Smith, from Broken Bow, Oklahoma, roping the horns and Eaves, from Lonedell, Missouri, roping heels, they stopped the clock in 4.8 seconds. That is the fastest time in the second round of competition. They were among all of the teams who roped in the first found on Monday here. Their 5.3 in the first round was just out of the top eight who won money but gave them an opportunity to move into the overall standings.

Now, with their success on Wednesday night, they have the fastest total time on two runs at 10.1. They will return to Caldwell on Saturday night trying to earn their first pair of championship spurs from the rodeo here.

They are also looking for big paychecks and working to improve their position in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Standings. They are both currently in fourth place and will qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo next December. Last year was the second year they roped together for world titles and they finished as reserve world champions.

Bull rider Guthrie Murray from Miami, Okla., came one step closer to his first NFR qualification on Wednesday night as well. Murray rode a bull from D & H Cattle Company that is just four years old and hasn’t earned a name yet.

When the judges added up their scores, Murray had an 85 by his name and the bull’s owners are thinking about his name. Prior to the Caldwell Night Rodeo, Murray was 13th in the world standings. The top 15 make a trip to Las Vegas in December to compete for world titles.

Murray is one of three bull riders who have been successful here so far. His 85-point ride puts him in second place overall and he is likely to get a good check at the end of Saturday night’s rodeo.

The third performance of the rodeo begins at 8 p.m. Thursday night which will be raising funds for “Power of Pink” Patrons are encouraged to wear pink and help support breast cancer awareness. More information is available at www.caldwellnightrodeo.com.
