End of Season Push Continues at Washington State Fair Rodeo

For the Puyallup Pro Rodeo

PUYALLUP, Wash. – Sept. 5, 2014— With the end of a the regular rodeo season on the horizon some contestants are seeing their hopes of a Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualification becoming a reality, and the Washington State Fair rodeo is part of that.

The top 15 in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association at the end of the season will make the trip to Las Vegas in December to compete at rodeo’s championship event. Jesse and Jake Wright from Milford, Utah, have both been there — Jesse four times and Jake twice. Jesse left the 2012 NFR as the world champion saddle bronc rider.

This season has not been one that dreams are made of with the twin brothers being on the bubble. Jesse is in 11th place and while he is in the top 15 he would definitely like to improve his position so no one moves him out. One of the riders that could move him down is Jake Wright who is 17th in the standings.

Jesse is in the driver’s seat after a good performance at the Justin Boots Playoffs here on Friday night. He currently leads the saddle bronc riding standings with an 82 point ride on Korkow Rodeo’s horse named Fraid Knot. However, just one-half a point behind with an 81.5 is Jake. While these scores may not hold the top two positions through Saturday’s rodeos, they should both be here Sunday competing for the Washington State Fair Rodeo championship.

Two Oregonians are at the top of the leaderboard in bareback riding. R.C. Landingham from Pendleton, Ore., scored an 85 on Growney Brothers Rodeo’s Capone at the matinee performance. Austin Foss from Terrebonne had an identical score on Korkow Rodeo’s Inky Friday night. Foss is third in the world standings and headed to his second NFR.

Landingham, a former National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association champion finished 16th in the world standings in 2013, a place no rodeo contestant ever wants to be in. Landingham is currently inside the top fifteen, but just barely at 14th. Any money he wins here will move him up and give him a better opportunity to make his first trip to the NFR.

There are two performances on Saturday at 1 and 6:30. Each performance will have 12 of rodeo’s top athletes trying be among the best who will compete at the Championship Finals on Sunday at 1.
