Exciting Bull Riding Caps Off Caldwell Night Rodeo

By Susan Kanode for the Caldwell Night Rodeo

CALDWELL, Idaho – Rookie bull rider Tristan Mize might have had the ride of his life at the final performance of the Caldwell Night Rodeo.

Mize, from Bryan, Texas, rode Powder River Rodeo’s Savage Moves for 90.5 points in front of a sold-out crowd on Saturday night. According to probullstats.com, that is the highest marked ride of the young bull rider’s career. It earned him the Caldwell Night Rodeo championship and $7,501.

The money is equally as important for the first-year member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). He is currently second in the rookie of the year race and has some ground to make up to catch standings leader Boudreaux Campbell. Mize was also 23rd in the PRCA’s world standings before his win here. He should move into the top 20 and if he continues to win has an outside chance at qualifying for his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

The star of Caldwell’s bull riding was actually the bull Savage Moves. He was ridden three times here and each time a cowboy nodded his head, he got a check. Along with Mize’s first place, third place and fifth place checks were earned on the big red bull. A total of $13,502 was paid to the lucky cowboys that rode him.

The PRCA reserve champion bucking bull made two appearances here and was ridden on Saturday night. The reigning college champion Cole Melancon from Liberty, Texas, rode him for 90 points and a second-place finish. Melancon earned $5,751 which will help him in his quest to be in Vegas to ride for a world championship next December. Prior to Caldwell he was sixth in the world standings.

Clayton Biglow from Clements, Calif., was the big winner here, but not by much. Biglow won the bareback riding and $8,382. Stevi Hillman from Weatherford, Texas, was just $50 behind him after winning the barrel race. Hillman broke the arena record in the second round, then came back and had another time that would have broken the record had she not had a 16.68 previously.

Hillman stopped the clock on Saturday night in 16.93 seconds. Her total of 50.69 seconds on three runs was nearly a full second ahead of the woman in second place, Taci Bettis from Round Top, Texas.

All of the champions here received a pair of trophy spurs and a new Yeti cooler for their wins. Other winners were Rowdy Parrott, Mamou, La., in the steer wrestling, Jacobs Crawley, Boerne, Texas, in the saddle bronc riding, and Jake Pratt from Ellensburg, Washington in the tie-down roping. There was a tie for the team roping championship between clay Smith from Broekn Bow, Oklahoma and Paul Eaves from Lonedell, Missouri and Tyler Wade from Terrell, Texas, and Billie Jack Saebens from Nowata, Oklahoma. This year’s rodeo featured a payoff of $297,375.

Plans for the 84th Caldwell Night Rodeo are already underway. More information is available at www.caldwellnightrodeo.com.
