Field Set for Championship Round at Caldwell Night Rodeo

By Susan Kanode for the Caldwell Night Rodeo

CALDWELL, Idaho — Friday night at the Caldwell Night Rodeo saw several contestants moving into the overall standings and having a chance to compete here again.

Saturday night will feature the top 12 in the bareback riding and saddle bronc riding based on their first round of competition. The steer wrestlers, team ropers, tie-down ropers and barrel racers all competed twice. Their times were added together with the fastest overall leaders advancing.

In the bareback riding, Logan Patterson from Kim, Colo., and Grant Denny from Minden, Nev., had the high-marked rides on Friday at 82. It was just enough points to qualify them for Saturday. They are tied for ninth place.

In the team roping, Texans Tyler Wade and Tyler McKnight are part of a three-way tie for fifth place thanks in part to their 6.6 second run on Friday. They have a total of 11.7 on two runs. Tyler Wade was part of a tie for the 2017 championship here roping with Billy Jack Saebens. He now has a chance to repeat, but the team that he and Saebens tied with, Clay Smith of Broken Bow, Okla., and Paul Eaves, of Lonedell, Mo., are at the top of the overall standings with a total time of 10.7.

Other champions that are defending their titles are Stevi Hillman in the barrel racing who enters Saturday night’s competition in second place. Hillman, from Weatherford, Texas has 34.47 seconds, just a tick away from Ivy Conrado of Hudson, Colo., who leads with 34.40.

California’s Clayton Biglow got to take the victory lap here last year as the bareback riding champion. That helped him secure a second trip to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo last December. Biglow is currently fourth in the world standings and hoping for some money from Caldwell to add to his bank account. He is in fifth place, but is just two points behind world champion Tim O’Connell from Zwingle, Iowa, who is in the lead.

Championship Night at the Caldwell Night Rodeo starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
