Field Set for Championship Sunday at Washington State Fair Rodeo

By Susan Kanode
For the Puyallup Pro Rodeo

PUYALLUP, Wash. – With four performances in the books at the Washington State Fair Rodeo, opportunities to win a championship here have been narrowed down.

In the events sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, the best eight in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping and bull riding will compete here on Sunday. In the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel race, the top 12 times from four preliminary performances advanced.

Rusty Wright from Milford, Utah, has an opportunity to narrow the gap in the world standings in saddle bronc riding. Wright is has sewn up his first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualification and is second in the standings. He was $13,000 behind leader Cody DeMoss prior to the rodeo here and has already won $6,754 here.

The son of two-time world champion saddle bronc rider Cody Wright, Rusty rode the Calgary Stampede horse Mata Fact for 83 points to win the first round here. That score advanced him to Sunday’s semi-finals where he will be a favorite to win. He will have to beat two of his uncles, Alex and Jake Wright and CoBurn Bradshaw who is married to Rusty’s aunt. With half of the saddle bronc riding field being related, there is a pretty good chance they will keep a Puyallup win in the family.

Kaycee Feild, from Spanish Fork, Utah, and Marcos Costa from Childress, Texas will be defending their titles here from last year. Feild has won the bareback riding here three of the last four years. Costa, who is originally from Brazil won the tie-down roping and needs the win here to secure his first trip to Las Vegas to compete at the NFR in December. Costa is currently 12th in the world standings.

Feild is a four-time world champion who is going to compete at his eighth NFR this year. He leads the world standings and as the eighth man to qualify for Sunday’s semi-finals, he has some ground to make up.

The championship rounds at the Justin Boots Playoffs at the Washington State Fair Rodeo will start at 1 p.m., where individual event champions will be crowned.
