Field Set for Final Performance at Washington State Fair Rodeo

By Susan Kanode
For the Puyallup Pro Rodeo

PUYALLUP, Wash. – Sept.6, 2014—Cowboys that have been in the pressure cooker might be breathing a little easier after the Washington State Fair Rodeo comes to a close on Sunday, Sept. 7.

Three of them made big moves here already in the first round of competition. Bull rider Cody Campbell from Summerville, Ore., is coming off a big win at the Xtreme Bulls last week in Ellensburg. Momentum and being healthy helped him here. Campbell won the first round with an 86-point effort on Growney Brothers Rodeo’s Wish this earning $4,397.

He qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) for the first time in 2013 and is working hard to be among the top 15 that make it to rodeo’s championship event again this year. Last year, Campbell’s wife was not able to go to Las Vegas with him for the NFR as the couple was expecting their first child. He is currently 19th in the world standings so a win here would help him make this year’s NFR, family in tow.

In the saddle bronc riding, it was Cody DeMoss who had a very important ride. The Heflin, La., resident tied for first place in the round with Tyler Corrington from Hastings, Minn. They each had 83-point rides earning $3,874. Corrington is seventh in the world standings and in good shape. DeMoss, on the other hand is in 15th and needs every penny he can earn between now and the end of the regular season Sept. 30 to secure his 10th NFR qualification.

It is very likely that a DeMoss or a Wright will win the saddle bronc riding championship here on Sunday. Along with Cody, his younger brother Heith DeMoss also qualified for the finals. There are five members of the Wright family competing as well. Brothers Cody, Jake, Jesse and Spencer will be cheering for Rusty, Cody’s son who qualified in the final spot.

Kyle Irwin from Robertsdale, Ala., was ranked 15th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings prior to this rodeo. He bettered himself already with a first place finish in the first round stopping the clock in 3.7 seconds to win $3,923. The steer wrestling is one of the tightest races heading into the NFR and even with another big check on Sunday, Irwin’s first NFR qualification isn’t a sure thing.

Sunday’s rodeo will see champions crowned in these events as well as bareback riding, team roping, tie-down roping, and the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel race. Action starts at 1 p.m.
