Field Set for San Antonio Rodeo Championships

For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 28, 2015) — The San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo is just one performance away from crowning the 2015 champions.

Semifinals 2 was completed on Friday night with three of last year’s champions earning enough money to advance to the finals and have a chance at repeat titles in the AT&T Center. The first of those was bareback rider Steven Peebles from Redmond, Ore.

Peebles returned to competition here after sustaining a broken back last December at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. He finished just out of the money in the first round of the semifinals so needed a good check to move on. When the first horse he got on didn’t perform as hoped, he got another opportunity and made the most of it.

The determined athlete got his bareback rigging and headed right back to the bucking chutes to get on Cervi Brother’s horse named Earth Friendly. That had a much better result as he scored 84 points – enough to tie for first place with Wyoming’s Seth Hardwick. The top five in total earnings advance to the final round of competition. Peebles finished in fourth place.

Sage Kimzey earned titles at San Antonio’s Xtreme Bulls competition and the rodeo last year. Kimzey rode both of his bulls in the semifinals and finished third in the money. Saturday will be a busy one for him as he hopes to ride his first-round bull in the Xtreme Bulls starting at 1, and qualifying for the finals in that $100,000 competition. Then he will be back at the 7:30 rodeo hoping to earn another championship buckle and the cash that goes with it.

Wade Sundell made the victory lap as last year’s saddle bronc riding champion. He was successful in the first semifinals and will be defending his title Saturday night.

Brothers Orin and Tyrel Larsen from Inglis, Manitoba both advanced to the finals. Orin made it in bareback riding while Tyrel will be competing in saddle bronc riding. Clay and Travis Tryan are brothers from Billings, Mont., who will be competing against each other in team roping here on Saturday night.

Also in saddle bronc riding, brothers Jake and Spencer Wright have advanced to the finals. All of these men competed in semifinals 2. Another Wright, Jake and Spencer’s nephew Rusty qualified for the finals out of semifinals 1.

Xtreme Bulls competition starts at 1 p.m. Final rodeo action gets underway at 7:30 p.m.

The following are results from the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo which features over $1.65 million in cash and prizes.
