For the Record: Grand National Stock Show & Rodeo

Since 1941, the Grand National Stock Show & Rodeo in San Francisco has played host to some of ProRodeo’s biggest names and most talented cowboys – but only the best made the arena record book.

In a ride that’s unlikely to be topped, bull rider Don Gay set the arena record with a 97-point ride on RSC’s Oscar in 1977. Gay’s score is the third-highest in ProRodeo history, and it’s five points higher than any bull ride made throughout the 2017 season. A 98-point ride was made by Denny Flynn on Steiner’s Red Lightning in Palestine, Ill., in 1979 and a 100-point ride (a perfect score) was made by Wade Leslie on Growney’s Wolfman in Central Point, Ore., in 1991.

As for the two-head average record in bull riding at San Francisco, Bryan Richardson originally set the record in 2002 with his 180-point total, which Thomas Bert matched in 2004.

Trevor Brazile set the arena record in 2007 for most money won in all-around at $9,012.

Although he’s primarily known as a bull rider, Ty Murray holds two bareback riding records in San Francisco, both set in 1991. First, Murray nailed a 92-point ride, which helped him also set the three-head average record of 255 points. Meanwhile, Jason Havens holds the two-head average record with the 169 points he scored in 2007.

Steer wrestling’s competition was fierce in 2007, as Luke Branquinho set the arena record in 2.7 seconds. That same year, Clayton Hass set the three-run average record with 12.2 seconds. One year later, Matt Deskovick clocked in at 7.8 seconds on two runs in 2008.

Team ropers Logan Olson and Broc Cresta set the arena record in 2008 with their 4.0-second run. Meanwhile, Daniel Green and Todd Hampton set the two-run average record with 11.4 seconds, which was matched by Jake Cooper and Matt Garza in 2009. The team roping three-run average record of 14.8 seconds was set by Chad Masters and Michael Jones in 2003.

Saddle bronc rider Bradley Harter set the San Francisco record in 2008 with his 90-point ride. The two-head average record was set by Spencer Wright in 2012 with 171 points. Meanwhile, Ryan Mapston’s three-head average record of 245 points has remained untouched since 1997.

Tie-down roper Blair Burk set the arena record in 2006 with his 7.3-second run. The two-run average record of 16.8 seconds was set by Shane Slack in 2010, and the three-run average record of 24.6 seconds was set by Trevor Brazile in 2007.

Barrel racer Pamela Capper has the newest arena record with her 2015 run of 14.80 seconds.

The Grand National Stock Show & Rodeo’s highest payout was in 2006 with a grand total of $234,627.
