For the Record: Guymon

The Guymon Pioneer Days Rodeo started during the Depression era of the early 1930s when Guymon, Okla., was the epicenter of the Dust Bowl and locals were looking for a way to bring visitors to town and celebrate in the midst of hard times.

Since 1951, Guymon has been one of the liveliest stops on the ProRodeo spring run and there’s a different kind of “hard times” on everyone’s mind – rodeo records that are hard times to beat.

Cowboys will have from May 4-6 to stake their claim of Guymon’s prize money and possibly leave their mark in the rodeo’s record book.

Guymon’s biggest payout was in 2007 with $376,535.

Cody Ohl set the record for most money won in all-around in 2003 with $14,107.

Bareback rider Matt Mosher set the record of 90 points in 2005. The two-head average record of 172 points was set by Jason Havens in 2004.

Steer wrestling’s competition was fierce in 2008 as two records were set. Jason Miller made a 2.9-second run and Luke Branquinho set the three-run average record at 10.9 seconds. Kirby Kaul holds the four-run average record of 16.3 seconds, which he set in 2001.

Team ropers Landon McClaugherty and Tommy Zuniga set the record of 4.6 seconds in 2013. The three-run average of 20.0 seconds was set by Coleman Proctor and Jake Long in 2015. Frank Graves and Monty Joe Petska set the four-run average record of 35.5 seconds in 2001.

Saddle bronc rider Glen O’Neill set two records in 2005. O’Neill made a 91-point record ride which helped him set the two-head average record of 172 points.

Tie-down roper Hunter Herrin set two records during two separate years at Guymon. In 2011, he made a record-setting 7.0-second run. Then in 2012, Herrin set the three-run average record of 23.6 seconds. Fred Whitfield set the four-run average record of 33.4 seconds in 2006.

Barrel racer Cassie Moseley set two records in 2007. She made a record-setting 15.83-second run which helped her also set the three-run average record of 49.76 seconds. Tammy Key-Fischer set the two-run average record in 2008 at 33.32 seconds.

Steer roper Dan Fisher set the 8.6-second record in 1990. Brian Garr set the three-head average record of 41.0 seconds in 2017. Landon McClaugherty set the five-head average record in 63.1 seconds in 2009. Guy Allen set the six-head average record of 77.4 seconds in 2000.

Bull rider Tyler Smith (pictured above) set the record with a 93-point ride in 2013. The two-head average record of 179 points was set by Wesley Silcox in 2007.
