Former Saddle Bronc Champ Hopes for Another San Antonio Victory

By Susan Kanode
For the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Feb. 15, 2015) — Tyler Corrington from Hastings, Minn., had one of the best seasons of his career in 2013 and winning the saddle bronc riding title at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo was a big part of that.

Corrington distanced the rest of the saddle bronc riding field at Saturday night’s rodeo by six points with an 85-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Tokoyo Bubbles. This was the first round of three rounds in the second bracket at the $1.65 million rodeo, so each contestant has three opportunities to cash in during preliminary competition.

First place in each event in those preliminary rounds pays $2,281 and it was a happy Corrington that added that to his earnings. Every dollar is important here as that is how contestants advance to the semi-finals.

There are 10 contestants in each event in five brackets. The top four money earners all advance to one of two semi-finals starting Feb. 24. The first bracket was completed at the Saturday matinee performance with a saddle bronc rider and bareback rider finishing in a tie for top money winners here so far.

Austin Foss, a two-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier from Terrebonne, Ore., earned $5,703 in bareback riding. Sterling Crawley also has been to Las Vegas twice to compete at rodeo’s championship event in saddle bronc riding. Crawley, from Stephenville, Texas won two of the preliminary rounds and finished third in another for a total of $5,703.

Crawley broke his arm the first of January and prior to coming here, had just been on two bucking horses after recovering. The third bucking horse he got on took to a round win. Then he got to climb on the back of a saddle horse to make the coveted victory lap around the arena.

Sarah Rose McDonald has taken the barrel racing world by storm after winning every round at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo earlier this month. The Brunswick, Ga., resident and 2014 Women’s Professional Rodeo Association Rookie of the Year moved to the top of the world standings with that win.

Her momentum continued here with a win in the first round of the second bracket Saturday night. She and her horse Fame Fling and Bling, an eight-year-old mare she fondly calls Bling stopped the clock in 13.83 seconds, over a tenth of a second faster than the rest of the field.

The second round of bracket 2 will be Sunday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m.
