High Praise for CBR Bucking Bull of the Year

911 Hy Test
WEATHERFORD, Texas (July 28, 2017) – 911 Hy Test, an eight year old bucking bull owned by Matt Scharping of Phenom Genetics, Inc., was voted by his peers, CBR bull riders and stock contractors, as the the most valuable player on the 2017 Road to Cheyenne and the title of CBR Bucking Bull of the Year.
Winning a Hy O Silver custom Trophy buckle, a pair of CBR logo hand made custom boots by Fenoglo Boot Company, a pure beaver felt hat from American Hat Co, and a custom Juan Munoz Saddle, Matt Scharping and Jeff Harris accepted the prestigious award from Tuff Hedeman on Sunday night at the CBR’s annual Gala and Banquet.
“It is so special to win this award, I raised this bull and he is part of the family, he loves his job and is upset if he doesn’t get to load up and get on the trailer,” said Scharping from his home in Arlington, Minnesota.
The two time CBR World Finals and three-time PBR Finals bull lived up to the award he won less than 48 hours later when he was back doing what he does best – buck.
Hy Test bucked in the third round for the Harris Rockin C- Rafter B – Harris bull team and assisted Juan Alonzo to a 90 point ride in round three of his second appearance at a CBR World Finals.
“Juan bucked off him earlier in the year, and I told him, he will feel like he’s backing away from you while bucking,” advised Scharping who says his bucker definitely fits left handers like PRCA Rookie of the Year leader Boudreaux Campbell – better than right handed cowboys.
“He is an awesome bull that bucks every time and never has a day off. All the guys would love to get on him because you have a chance to win if you ride him! He had won me a lot this year and he is my favorite bull of the CBR,” said Campbell who won two events this season on board 911.
Like many of the Bull of the Year winners, the story of Hy Test is sometimes reduced to his incredibly consistent bull score statistics, but that is where the normality ends.
This big brown and white paint bull is anything but normal. Chasing down bullfighters might be his hobby on the weekends, but if you walk up to him in the back pens you can not only pet him but sit on him as he awaits his world famous opponents. According to his breeder and proud owner he hates other bulls, but loves all people.
“I think what makes Hy Test special is the fact that he enjoys the game so much. He’s a huge family pet that also doubles as a great bucking bull!” said Matt Sharping of Phenom Genetics.
News of his gentle side circulated and before long he was being featured with news reporters who just had to get on a bull inside the chutes.
‘The most humorous moment I can remember was at a bull riding and my daughter was riding him around his pen bareback – a bull rider came up and was joking about my “daughter could ride that one”, so Scharping said go ahead – get on..
“The rider must have squeezed his legs like he was going to attempt and Hy Test 911 bucked him up and over the panels of the pen,” said Scharping when asked about his well-known and documented good natured bucker.
But the story of Hy Test is not just the three event wins and over $75,000 he provided to riders in CBR competition this season – it is a story of two rookies taking on the bucking bull industry together.
911 was one of two bull calves born to Matt Scharping in his first set calf crop.
“We started out together, neither one of us knowing much about the business, he succeeded in spite of me,” laughed Scharping.
In 2011, as a two year old Hy Test competed in approximately seven Midwest Bucking Bull futurity events and never failed to earn a check, he was the MBBA Year end and Finals Champion.
“He never remember him having a bad trip,” added Scharping.
Believing he needed time to grow and develop he turned him out his three year old year, but towards the end of the year he made his way to Texas to Ace of Spades Ranch where Scott Accomazo began his career as a rider bull.
“He just kept getting better and better – the more we bucked him,” said the Minnesota cowboy.
The Bull of the Year program was established by CBR to recognize individual bulls who outperformed the expanding group of professional bucking bulls that provide the athletic challenge at each Road to Cheyenne tour event during the regular season.
CBR fans first saw this great bucker in January of 2016. He was the anchor bull on Jared Allen’s Pro Bull Team Championship event titles in El Paso and Rio Rancho that year.
911 Hy Test began the 2016-17 year representing Jared Allen’s Pro Bull Teams and then continued competing on Jeff Harris’ bull team partnerships and was part of Harris six team qualifying equation on this year’s Road to Cheyenne. He was the Champion Bull (High Marked Ride) in the Hobbs and Las Vegas Road to Cheyenne tour events.
911 is intertwined in many of the great stories on the 2017 Road to Cheyenne. He bucked in 11 tour stops where only two cowboys heard the whistle while still on his back. But what is most impressive is all three of those 8 Second rides were part of the victory path and each time he was ridden the rider would advance and eventually win the event.
“When you think of Hy Test you think of a bull that loves what he’s doing as much as you do the guarantees you a solid performance every time the gate opens and a pleasure to be around, he is very special to my family and it’s been a pleasure to have him at the ranch this year,” said former CBR Stock Contractor of the Year and World Champion Bull Team owner, Jeff Harris.
This action packed brown and white paint bull carried Boudreaux Campbell to the pay window twice winning the Hobbs, New Mexico and Salina, Kansas tour stops while thrilling the crowd with 90 and 90.5 winning rides. But it was Travis Briscoe’s ride in round one in Las Vegas that delivered his highest marked ride of the season, 91.5 for Briscoe’s first CBR event win.
911’s average bull score this season for CBR was 44.375. His highest marked bull score was 45.5 in both Las Vegas and El Paso, the latter being where he bucked off Jeff Askey.
911 helped Campbell finished third on the season and the highest ranked rookie in CBR. Hy Test is the reason Briscoe qualified for the World Finals when he won the largest purse of the season, $43,250 aboard the perennial bucker.
Scharping is looking forward to the next generation of 911.
“I bred him to my Air Time heifers this season,” said Scharping who said at the moment 911 Hy Test is just chilling at the ranch.
