Jake Watson Enjoys Summer Trip to Teepee Creek

Airdrie, AB – “It’s a good time to get on a roll.”

That was Jake Watson’s reaction to his saddle bronc riding win at the recently completed Teepee Creek Stampede. Watson, the Hudson’s Hope, British Columbia cowboy, collected 86 points for his ride on Kesler Championship Rodeo’s 12 year old black CFR-NFR mare, Summer Trip, to earn $2052.

“It was the third time I had that horse,” Watson noted, “The first time she bucked me off, the second time I rode her, but not very well. And this time went my way.” The win was Watson’s second of the month – following up on his one-two split at Airdrie Pro Rodeo – to kick off his July. The CFR-WNFR qualifier has now moved into the top ten 2018 Canadian standings.

After a slow start to the season, Watson went back to his old saddle with positive results almost immediatley. “I cussed myself for switching around saddles earlier in the year and trying to change things. Now I’m back to my old saddle and feel confident and comfortable. It’s the right time to get some momentum going.”

Watson and travelling partners, Sam Kelts, Ricky Warren and Kolby Wanchuk will be hitting the trail hard from this point on in the season, with Nampa, Idaho the first stop on their upcoming schedule.

The 25 year old has his sights set firmly on the 2018 CFR but hasn’t ruled out another trip to Las Vegas as well. “It’s still early,” Watson commented. “And you’re still in the running for the NFR for quite awhile yet.”

Other Teepee Creek winners included Cowley, WY bareback rider JR Vezain who marked 88 points on Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Alley Trail for $1863, Donalda, AB steer wrestler Curtis Cassidy (4.0 secs, $2162), Val Marie, SK tie-down roper Wyatt Hayes (7.7 secs, $2205) and Innisfail, AB cowgirl, Sydney Daines (17.402 secs, $2087). Tristan Woolsey of Nanton and Denver Johnson of Strathmore continued their winning ways as their 4.6 second run earned them a share of a three way split in the team roping. The hottest due in Canada shared the win with BC cowboys Jace Lambert and Nick Teixeira and the Graham brothers from Wainwright, Dawson and Dillon. Meeting Creek, Alberta’s Garrett Green was one of only two bull riders to make the 8 second klaxon at Teepee Creek. Green was rewarded with an 86 for the effort on Kesler Rodeo’s Anything Goes – good for $2242. In the two-head novice events, bareback riders Mascon Helmeczi and Colton Ouelette both managed first place finishes and in the novice saddle bronc riding, it was Hunter Sawley and Ben Andersen who picked up go-roung wins. Sexsmith, Alberta steer rider, Auzyn Corr topped the field in his event with a 72 point ride for $574.
