July Fourth Earns Titles for Stall and Schmidt

CODY, Wyo.; — The Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede is known for being one of the best rodeos on the circuit over the Fourth-of-July holiday and this year it was the highest paying with $348,402 in prize money.

Two contestants that showed up on the Fourth of July for the last of four performances were extremely happy they were here. Chuck Schmidt from Keldron, S.D., won the saddle bronc riding with an 87-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Tip Off. That was good for first place and $8,657.

Brett Stall, from Detroit Lakes, Minn., was one of two bull riders successful at Stampede Park on Saturday and finished the rodeo with an 87 point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Flash Boy. That earned Stall $9,076. He was 15th in the world standings prior to his win here. Last year, he won the Cody/Yellowstone Xtreme Bulls so as long as he is riding bulls, he is likely to put Cody on his rodeo list.

The Cody Stampede turned “Cowboy Christmas” around for Schmidt. After bucking off of several horses and not winning a dime at other rodeos, he finally had success here. Schmidt was sixth in the world standings and is likely headed to his second Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). He qualified in 2011.

The former college champion (2008) was doing well in 2013 when disaster struck. In August of that year, he broke his neck, had surgery to fuse vertebras together and missed the rest of that year and all of 2014. He started off this year well with wins in Jackson, Miss., and Austin, Texas. But this one is one he will probably never forget.

“This made my fourth,” Schmidt said. “That horse was outstanding. I was getting pretty discouraged, so this means a lot.”

Plans are underway for the 97th annual Buffalo Bill Cody Stampede. For dates and information go to www.codystampederodeo.com. The Cody Nite Rodeo will start again in Stampede Park on July 5.
