Knapp Wins Grand Rapids Classic

By: Mandi McCary

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After a week of frigid temps swept across the Midwest, PBR’s (Professional Bull Riders) Scottie Knapp (Edgewood, New Mexico) brought the heat in front of a sold-out crowd on Saturday night as he won the Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour’s Grand Rapids Classic.

Following an 82.5-point ride aboard Southern Charm (New Frontier Rodeo) in Round 1, the Michigan crowd inside Van Andel Arena erupted as the New Mexico cowboy rocketed from the chutes recording the highest score of the championship round with 88 points aboard Bandit (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls). The win earned him 170 world points and a $6,200 paycheck.

Every winner of a Pendleton Whisky Velocity Tour event has an opportunity to compete at an Unleash The Beast series event, and with the victory in Grand Rapids, Knapp will go to Los Angeles for the Iron Cowboy, presented by Ariat, on Feb. 22-23 at STAPLES Center.

Brazilian bull rider Caic Cassio Carvalho finished second, collecting a paycheck for $4,650 along with 90 world points. He rode to the runner-up finish compliments of his 83.5-point ride aboard Imagine Dragons (Derek Bevington) and 85.5 points on Pneu-Dart’s Coal Miner (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) in the championship round.

Third place went to fellow Brazilian Ueberson Duarte (Itambacuri, MG, Brazil) for his successful 8-second ride on Mr. Conner (Derek Bevington) in Round 1 for 82.5 points. Later in the championship round, Duarte conquered Slow Ride (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls) for 84.5 points. For his efforts he collected $2,800 and 55 world points.

Young gun Jake Lockwood (Volborg, Montana) finished fourth, backed by an 86-point effort on Buck Naked (Broken Arrow Bucking Bulls) in the opening round. Despite being bucked off of Peep Show (Cornwell Bucking Bulls) in the championship round, Lockwood leaves Grand Rapids with $2,600 and 70 world points.

Rounding out the Top 5 was Eli Byler (Nashville, Ohio), who recorded an energetic 85-point ride in the opening round aboard Otis (Mike Miller Bucking Bulls). His matchup against Little Anthony (Cornwell Bucking Bulls) didn’t make the 8 in the championship round but he collected $1,740 and 40 world points for his efforts.

Three bovines shared the spotlight for top bull scores of the night. Smooth Highway owned by Broken Arrow Bucking Bulls tied with Cornwell Bucking Bulls’ Peep Show and Plum Crazy with matching 44-point scores. In Round 1, Smooth Highway dispatched Cristiano Figueredo (Sapucaia do Norte, Minas Gerais, Brazil) after 3.29 seconds. In the championship round, Peep Show fired out of the chutes dispatching Jake Lockwood in 2.93 seconds, followed by Plum Crazy upsetting Mason Taylor’s (Maypearl, Texas) ride after just 1.66 seconds.

The Velocity Tour next travels to Edinburg, Texas, for the Edinburg Invitational, on February 9.
