Kolbaba Wins Des Moines Invitational; Moves Into Top 10

DES MOINES, Iowa – A rookie did it again as 20-year-old Derek Kolbaba won the Des Moines Invitational Sunday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.

Kolbaba’s 89-point ride on Kookaburra in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round secured the first Built Ford Tough Series event win of Kolbaba’s career. Kolbaba went 2-for-3, earning 560 world points in the victory to move to seventh in the world standings.

2008 World Champion Guilherme Marchi made his way back to the scoresheet after a second-place finish. Marchi went 2-for-3 and capped his weekend with an 88-point ride on Machinery Auctioneer’s Little Joe. Marchi earned 400 points towards the world standings.

Fellow Brazilian Joao Ricardo Vieira came in third after a 2-for-3 performance. The 220 world points he earned for the finish moved him to second place in the world standings and leaves him just 125 points behind current world leader J.B. Mauney with just one event left in the first half of the season.

Cooper Davis also went 2-for-3 and finished fourth in the event, picking up 150 points toward the world standings. Davis’ performance in Des Moines moved him to 11^th in the world standings.

Ryan Dirteater rounded out the Top 5 after winning Round 1 Saturday night. Dirteater also went 2-for-3, but was bucked off by Boot Jack in the championship round in 4.24 seconds.

The PBR will close out the first half of the season with the third PBR Major, Last Cowboy Standing, which will headline Las Vegas Helldorado Days May 13-15. The winner will walk away with a significant payday and crucial world standings points.
