Kolbaba Wins Round 1 in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Young gun Derek Kolbaba (Walla Walla, Washington) continued gaining momentum in the World Championship race when he picked up the Round 1 win in the Built Ford Tough Series Cooper Tire’s Take the Money and Ride, presented by Wrangler, on Saturday night at SAP Center.

Kolbaba, the No. 4 ranked bull rider in the world, secured the round victory with an impressive 88-point ride aboard Hitman (EVP Bucking Bulls). The victory was Kolbaba’s seventh round win of the season.

Kaique Pacheco (Itatiba, Brazil) and Brennon Eldred (Sulphur, Oklahoma) tied for second place with 87-point rides. Pacheco, the No. 3 man in the world standings, reached 8 seconds aboard Blackberry Smoke (New West Rodeos), while Eldred dominated aboard Tuxedo (Diamond Bar Cattle).

Reigning 2016 PBR World Champion Cooper Davis (Jasper, Texas) was not far behind in fourth place after riding War Cry (New West Rodeos) for 86.5 points. Davis continued his quest to the top, earning 40 coveted points toward the standings. Davis heads into Championship Sunday a mere 196.67 points behind current world leader Eduardo Aparecido (Gouvelandia, Brazil)

2004 PBR World Champion Mike Lee (Paradise, Texas) and Joao Ricardo Vieira (Itatinga, Brazil) rounded out the Top 5 in Round 1 with matching 86.25-point rides. Lee started off the night aboard Modified Clyde (Dakota Rodeo – Chad Berger/Clay Struve/Ken Barnhard) followed by Vieira on Big Dirty (Dakota Rodeo/ Chad Berger/ Clay Struve).

Round 1 from San Jose will be available on demand on the PBR app and PBR.com/ondemand starting at 8 a.m. ET on Oct. 22.

The Top 35 bull riders in the world will return to SAP Center for Championship Sunday of the Cooper Tire’s Take the Money and Ride, presented by Wrangler, where each rider will face one more bull in Round 2 before the Top 15 will move on to the Built Ford Tough Championship Round where a winner will be crowned.

Championship Sunday from San Jose will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network at 6 p.m. ET on Oct. 22, with a full replay available on demand the next day at PBR.com/ondemand.
