Lawrence Secures Win, Moves Up in PBR’s TPD Standings

Stetson Lawrence currently sits third in the Professional Bull Riders Touring Pro Division standings after a victory July 18-19 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota.

PUEBLO, Colo. – Stetson Lawrence (Williston, North Dakota) currently sits third in the Professional Bull Riders Touring Pro Division standings after a victory July 18-19 in Thief River Falls, Minnesota.
Lawrence picked up 87.5 points in Round 1 and followed it up with an 85-point effort in the championship round for a total event score of 172.5 points to win $5,988.68.

Per TPD rules, a bull rider may enter an event as many times as he chooses. Some riders have been known to enter two, or even three times. Lawrence entered this event three times and captured not only first place, but also finished in the money in sixth and seventh places. He walked away with more than $9,000. The victory is Lawrence’s sixth of the season.

Reid Oftedahl (Wiggins, Colorado) claimed second place in the Thief River Falls event, a full point away from tying Lawrence for the win, with an 85.5 score on his first bull and an 86 in the short round for a 171.5 total and $4,466.97.

Taryl Smith (Litchville, North Dakota) notched a third-place finish with a total of 169.5 points to take home $2,208.94 for the weekend.

Nathan Schaper (Grassy Butte, North Dakota), competing in his first PBR event since his injury at the PBR Built Ford Tough Series event in Anaheim, California, in February, took home $1816.24 for his fourth place finish with 168 points.

In Tupelo, Mississippi, at the RMEF Big Bull Tour on July 18, Gage Gay (Staley, North Carolina) secured the win with a total of 168.5 points for $3,729.38 in prize money. The PBR’s top rookie rode for 84.5 points in Round 1, while earning 84 points for his effort in the championship round.

Billy Robinson (Galax, Virginia) placed second in Tupelo with 157.5 points for $2,926.13 and Gay landed in third place on his second entry with 87 points for $1,893.38. Dustin Boquet (Houma, Louisiana) rounded out the Top 4 with 85 points and $1,147.50

In front of his hometown crowd, Tony Mendes (Fruita, Colorado), posted the highest score of Round 1 of the West Slope Colorado Oil & Gas TPD event in Grand Junction, Colorado, on July 17.

The 86-point score earned him a spot in the championship round, but on his second ride of the night, Mendes was bucked off which allowed Scottie Knapp (Albuquerque, New Mexico) to clinch the win as the only rider with two successful rides, a 73.5 in the Round 1 and a 77.5 in the championship round. Knapp won $4,196.88 in the event with 151.0 points.

Mendes walked away in second place with $2,496.88 in prize money as Guytin Tsosie (Burnham, New Mexico) claimed third place with 82.5 points for $1,593.76. Cody Tesch (Berthoud, Colorado) rounded out the Top 4 with an 82-point score and $1,062.50 in winnings.

On July 19 at the Quapaw Casino TPD event in Miami, Oklahoma, three Built Ford Tough Series riders took the Top 3 spots. Joseph McConnel (Atoka, Oklahoma) earned first place on an 87-point score in Round 1 and followed it up with an 85.5-point score in the championship round for 172.5 total points and $4,288.10.

Matt Bohon (Cole Camp, Missouri) finished in second place with 88.5 points for $3,007.57 while L.J. Jenkins (Porum, Oklahoma) landed in third place with 84 points and $1,810.57 in prize money.

Rounding out the weekend’s events was the PBR’s TPD event at the Days of ’47 Rodeo in Salt Lake City on Monday, July 21. Schaper continued his comeback, going 2-for-2 for a total score of 167 to take first place and walk away with $6,908.80.

Kurt Shepard (Atherton, Queensland, Australia), who landed in Salt Lake City just three hours prior to the event, rode for an 87.5-point score in Round 1 for second place, taking home $5,397.50

Knapp captured third place with a score of 87 points in Round 1 and Markus Mariluch (Elko, Nevada) finished in fourth place with an 81-point score in the championship round. Knapp walked away with $3,562.35 while Mariluch earned $2,482.85.

This weekend the TPD will make stops in Idaho, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Montana and Texas.

On Friday, July 25, riders such as Jory Markiss (Missoula, Montana), Austin Meier (Kinta, Oklahoma) and Knapp will compete at the Sun Valley PBR event in Hailey, Idaho, at the Hailey Rodeo Grounds.

On Friday and Saturday, July 25-26, the RMEF Big Bull Tour Stanley/DeWalt Invitational will take place in Monroe, Louisiana, at the Monroe Civic Center. BFTS riders Chase Outlaw (Hamburg, Arkansas), Matt Triplett (Columbia Falls, Montana) and Josh Faircloth (Randleman, North Carolina) are all scheduled to ride.

The San Antonio PBR TPD begins at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 26 with Jason Malone (Pleasanton, Texas) and Lane Nobles (Mount Calm, Texas) expected to participate.

Current BFTS riders Kasey Hayes (Liberal, Kansas) and Stormy Wing (Dalhart, Texas) will be holding their own invitational in Guymon, Oklahoma, on Saturday, July 26, at the Henry C. Hitch Pioneer Arena. Besides Hayes and Wing, BFTS riders Ryan Dirteater (Hulbert, Oklahoma), Jordan Hupp (Stephenville, Texas), Gay and McConnel will also be riding.

The Livingston Classic PBR TPD in Livingston, Montana, on July 26 will feature Markiss, Tsosie and Dakota Beck (Moses Lake, Washington) riding while Flint Rasmussen will be providing the entertainment.
