Leaderboard Tightening Up at National Western Stock Show Rodeo

DENVER, Colo. – With nearly half a million dollars in prize money up for grabs at this year’s National Western Stock Show Rodeo, contestants are going for broke.

There was a change in both preliminary rounds of steer wrestling on Wednesday. At the matinee performance, Olin Hannum from Malad, Idaho had a 3.7 to take the lead in the second round. Unfortunately, a no time in the first round takes him out of any opportunity to qualify for Sunday’s U.S. Bank Championship Finals.

Then on Wednesday night, a world champion steer wrestling horse named Scooter showed fans why he is the best. Kyle Irwin and reigning world champion Tyler Pearson are partners on the sorrel gelding and both rode him here. Irwin, from Robertsdale, Alabama is now the most successful steer wrestler in the first round with a 3.5-second run.

Pearson, from Louisville, Miss., was right behind him with a 3.8 which is tied for second place. Both these men have their second-competition on Thursday morning so there is a good opportunity for some overall changes then.

Jennifer Barrett, from Buhl, Idaho, competed in the first-round of barrel racing at the matinee and had the fastest run of the whole rodeo when she stopped the clock in 15.28 seconds. She also had her second run in the Denver Coliseum Wednesday night, but a tipped-over barrel and a five-second penalty will see her making the trip home to Idaho hoping to get a good check from the first round.

There are two performances of the rodeo here on Thursday, at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.
