DENVER – Bareback riding once again proved to be the most exciting rodeo event at the National Western Stock Show on Sunday.

Saturday night Jake Brown, who is just coming off of his first qualification to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) scored 84 points with a solid showing. He had his second horse here at the Sunday matinee performance and made the most of an opportunity. Brown, from Hillsboro, Texas, had a whopping 90-point effort on Calgary Stampede’s Reckless Margie.

Not only did that put him in the lead in the second round, he also took command of the overall standings. Brown has 174 points on two horses and moved Tanner Aus, from Granite Falls, Minn., to second place with 169.

Another first time NFR qualifier made a good showing here in the steer wrestling. Baylor Roche, from Tremonton, Utah, finished last year’s season in ninth place and won nearly $150,000. He got a big chunk of that in Las Vegas at rodeo’s championships and is ready for another trip there next December. A win at the National Western would certainly help him accomplish that goal. Roche took two steers to the ground in the Denver Coliseum on Sunday in 4.1 and 4.6 seconds for a total of 8.7 seconds. He now leads the overall standings by half a second. Nick Guy from Sparta, Wis., is second with 9.2 seconds on two runs.

Team ropers Coleman Proctor, from Pryor, Okla., and Buddy Hawkins, II, from Columbus, Kan., are new overall leaders as well with a total time of 10.9 seconds. Proctor also competed at last year’s NFR, but with a different partner. He was heading for Jake Long from Coffeyville, Kan., and finished the season in fifth place.

Hawkins qualified for the NFR in 2013 and is anxious to get back there again. He and Proctor have a significant lead, but will have to wait until next weekend to see if it holds. Paul Beckett from Laramie, Wyo., and Chad Wahlert from Kersey, Colo., are second with 12.2.

Regular rodeo competition continues here through Jan. 23 where all of the U.S. Bank Championship Finals qualifiers will be determined. All of these contestants are in good position to make the trip back here next week, but with much more competition to come, their leads could be in jeopardy.

Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association action continues in the Denver Coliseum on Monday at 1. That will be followed by the Martin Luther King Jr., African American Heritage Rodeo of Champions at 6 p.m.

The following are unofficial results from the National Western Stock Show Rodeo sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
