NEW YORK – In his first appearance on the (PBR) Professional Bull Riders 2016 Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS), Paulo Lima rode away with $129,500, winning the first PBR Major of the season and covering the event’s $25,000 bonus bull in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round.

Lima received his spot in the Monster Energy Buck Off at the Garden lineup by winning the first BlueDEF Tour event – the PBR’s expansion tour – of 2016. Each BlueDEF Tour event winner is given the opportunity to compete in an upcoming BFTS event to try to earn enough points to qualify for the BFTS.  With his win, Lima is now the No. 1 bull rider in the PBR.

More than 34,900 fans over the weekend at MSG witnessed Lima’s perfect performance, as the rider went 4-for-4 and covered Cochise (Jane Clark/Gene Owen), the event’s bonus bull, for 90 points in the championship round. It was the highest-marked ride of the event.

Translated by fellow Brazilian Robson Palermo, Lima said, “Every bull rider has a dream to win a championship. I’m happy.”  Laughing, he added, “I’m going to take the money and put it in the bank.”

Lima earned 725 PBR world standings points for the first-place finish.

Palermo also went 4-for-4 for the event, the only other rider to do so, to capture second place, his best showing since he won the BFTS New York City event in 2013. Palermo has battled shoulder injuries since then. Palermo earned 495 world standings points for the finish and moved into the No. 4 position in the world.

Making it a Brazilian sweep of the Top 3, Joao Ricardo Vieira put up 90 points on Time Bomb (K-C/Josey McElroy Bucking Bulls/ Spark-lin Acres), tying Lima for the high-marked ride of the event, and landed in third place.

Getting his redemption, reigning PBR World Champion J.B. Mauney selected and covered Shaft (E-J Bucking Bulls, LLC./ Gene Owen) for 89.25 points in the championship round. Mauney had bucked off Shaft on Friday night during the PBR 15/15 Bucking Battle. He finished in fifth place for the event behind Aaron Roy. Roy received 259 world standings points for fourth place and Mauney received 258.25 points.

Sheep Creek (J.A.R.S. Bucking Bulls/ Gene Owen/ Big Big Stone Rodeo Co.) and Little Red Jacket (John McDonald) shared the Salem NationaLease High-Marked Bull award in New York City for their 45-point scores. Sheep Creek tossed Shane Proctor in 2.26 seconds in the championship round, while Little Red Jacket bucked off Kaique Pacheco in 6.79 seconds in the 15/15 Bucking Battle on the way to turning in their winning performances.

The Monster Energy Buck Off at the Garden was the second stop on the 2016 BFTS. The tour will travel to Oklahoma City next weekend, Jan. 22-24, for the Express Employment Professionals Invitational at Chesapeake Energy Arena. It will air on CBS Sports Network on Jan. 23 at 10 p.m. ET and Jan 24 at 8 p.m. ET.  Fans can also watch all of the action live on PBR LIVE at www.pbr.com.

The BFTS is televised every week on CBS, CBS Sports Network and networks around the world. BFTS telecasts are produced for the PBR under a multi-year agreement with David Neal Productions, a Los Angeles-based production company led by 34-time Emmy® Award winner and Peabody Award winner David Neal, who serves as executive producer.
