Listening to Our City – Celebrating the Sounds of Calgary Youth
Calgary – On April 21, 2017, the Jack Singer Concert Hall will be alive with the sound of music as the Calgary Stampede Foundation takes ownership of Listening to Our City, a concert event showcasing the best young musical talent and arts programs Calgary has to offer. The concert features inspiring musical performances from Calgary’s diverse and talented youth community.
“We’re excited to connect youth performers and performing arts programs in Calgary with each other, with audiences and with the Calgary Stampede,” said Aaron Park, manager, youth education programs at the Calgary Stampede Foundation. “It’s a great way to celebrate youth achievement in our city, provide collaborative performance experiences for young artists, and to share the experience with Calgary.”
In 2016, the Calgary Stampede’s youth programs were an integral part of the first Listening to Our City concert, which was produced by the MusiCounts committee for education as part of Juno week. The concert showcased over 500 youth performers, 12 youth performance groups and attracted over 600 spectators. As the Junos moved on to Ottawa in 2017, the Calgary Stampede Foundation is proud to take ownership of the Listening to Our City event in Calgary, and will continue to build on the success and momentum of the event.
This year, Listening to Our City will be held at the renowned Jack Singer Concert Hall and will feature performances by young artists such as nine-year-old flamenco guitar phenomenon, Harry Knight, violin virtuoso, Isabella Perron, and singer-songwriter, Kate Stevens. Also performing will be top student musicians from the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Separate School District, the Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede and the Calgary Stampede Showband.
Listening to Our City is one of the many initiatives led by the Calgary Stampede Foundation which aim to provide Alberta youth with the opportunity to develop strong roots in their community, while enhancing personal growth, citizenship and education.
