Lockwood Wins in Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. – The 2016 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Rookie of the Year Jess Lockwood (Volborg, Montana) had not held a buckle atop the shark cage as a winner of a Built Ford Tough Series (BFTS) event since winning two in January. He made his triumphant return by taking the victory at the Express Employment Professionals Classic, presented by Osage Casino, Sunday afternoon at the BOK Center in Tulsa.

Lockwood rode Pick-It Construction’s Find Jesus (Ogden Ranch/Hart Cattle Co.) for 89.25 points in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round to cap a 3-for-3 performance on his way to the victory in the opening event of the second half. Including his third place finish in Saturday’s 15/15 Bucking Battle, Lockwood went a combined 4-for-4 in Tulsa and earned 635 total world points and $44,765 over the weekend.

The win helped No. 3 Lockwood gain ground on PBR world leader Eduardo Aparecido (Gouvelandia, Brazil), who was bucked off in the championship round. The 19-year old now trails the world No. 1 by just 340 points heading into next weekend’s PBR Major in Nashville, Tennessee, where nearly double the world points will be on the line.

Ryan Dirteater was in the running to win his first ever BFTS event in his home state, but had to settle for second place in Tulsa. The Hulbert, Oklahoma, cowboy rode Cooper’s Comet (Broken Arrow Bucking Bulls) for 88 points in the championship round and ended the weekend a perfect 3-for-3 as well.

The second place effort was Dirteater’s best finish of the season and it earned him 340 world points and $16,850, moving him to No. 16 in the world standings. Despite missing out on the win, Dirteater still brought some smiles over the weekend as his annual team roping event on Friday raised $26,000 for both Make-A-Wish Oklahoma and the Rider Relief Fund.

2016 PBR World Champion Cooper Davis (Jasper, Texas) finished in third place after his own 3-for-3 weekend. Davis closed out his performance with an 88-point trip aboard Nailed (Broken Arrow Bucking Bulls) to net 270 world points and $11,275.

Last season, Davis used a second half push to claim his first World Championship buckle and took a big step toward defending his title by moving to No. 6 in the world standings heading into next weekend’s PBR Major in Nashville, which he won last year.

Chase Outlaw (Hamburg, Arkansas) was not far behind when he finished in fourth place following a 2-for-3 effort. Outlaw rode both of his bulls on Championship Sunday, starting with an 87-point ride on Dirt Man Do (Halpain Bucking Bulls) in Round 2, and ending with an 89.75-point trip on Air Marshall (Hart Cattle Company) to win the championship round.

The round win was Outlaw’s seventh of the season which leads the BFTS. Outlaw leaves Oklahoma with 215 world points and $12,100

Cody Nance (Paris, Tennessee) rounded out the Top 5 after going 3-for-3 to record his highest finish since March. On Sunday, Nance rode Hedoo (Jane Clark/Gene Owen) for 87.25 points in Round 2, then covered Wiley (JQH Bucking Bulls/Bar 3D/Wallgren) for 88 points in the championship round.

It was Nance’s third Top 5 finish of 2017 and it helped push him from No. 15 to No. 11 in the world standings after pocketing 205 world points and $7,850.

Jack Shot (D&H Cattle Co./David Huffman) and Cut the Cord (Broken Arrow Bucking Bulls) were both named the YETI “Built for the Wild” Bull of the Event after recording matching 44.25-point scores. Jack Shot earned the score after tossing Matt Triplett (Colmbia Falls, Montana) in Sunday’s championship round, while Cut the Cord disposed of Outlaw for the same score in Saturday’s 15/15 Bucking Battle.

The race to the 2017 Built Ford Tough World Finals will continue in Nashville, Tennessee’s Bridgestone Arena, where the Top 35 bull riders in the world will battle in the final PBR Major of the season, the Built Ford Tough Music City Knockout, presented by Cooper Tires, Aug. 18-19.

The unique bracket-style challenge will offer $100,000 in prize money, and double the amount of crucial world points, meaning everything will be on the line for the riders chasing the 2017 PBR World Championship.

Fans can watch a special pre-show on PBR LIVE and the PBR LIVE app starting at 8:30 p.m. ET on Aug. 18 before the action starts live on CBS Sports Network at 9:00 p.m. ET. CBS Sports Network will broadcast the closing rounds on Aug. 19 starting with the “Inside the PBR Majors” pre-show at 9:30 p.m. ET.

CBS will also broadcast the Music City Knockout on Sunday Aug. 20 starting at 1 p.m. ET.
