Mud doesn’t Slow Down Rodeo at 122nd Cheyenne Frontier Days

Levi Rudd of Chelsea, Okla., swam through the mud to win second place in the first round of steer wrestling at the 122nd Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. His time of 6.1 earned him $5,503. PRCA photo by Dan Hubbell

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – July 27, 2018 – After multiple torrential rains, the arena at the 122nd Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo looked like a big bowl of chocolate milk on Friday, and several of the contestants walked out of it looking as if they had been dipped in chocolate.

While the arena conditions were less than ideal, they had very little impact on two of the steer wrestlers. Levi Rudd from Chelsea, Oklahoma had the fast time of the day at 6.1 seconds. That gave him a second-place finish in the first round and netted the 28-year old $5,503. Just minutes before, Jacob Talley of Keatchie, Louisiana, stopped the clock in 6.7, which was good enough for fifth place and $3,027. Both cowboys earned enough to go shopping for new clothes which they will surely need after being covered with mud.

Cheyenne’s own Aaron Vosler finished at the top of the leaderboard with a time of 5.7. Unfortunately, he didn’t get a time in the second round, so the $6,327 that he earned for his first-round win will be the only check he gets here this year.

>Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifiers Brock Hansen, from Casa Grande, Arizona, and Ryan Motes, from Weatherford, Texas, had the fastest time of the day in team roping. With Hansen doing the heading and Motes heeling, they stopped the clock in 7.1 seconds giving them a second-place finish in the round. They each won $5,182. Texans Ty Bach and Trey Johnson were able to hold onto first place with a 7.0 earning $5,959 each.

The bull riders spent a lot of time cleaning their gear here on Friday. That didn’t bother Oklahoma’s Trevor Kastner who had the high score of the day. Kastner, from Roff, rode the Andrews Rodeo Company bull named Ludicrous for 86.5 points. He was part of a three-way tie for fifth place and earned $1,053. More importantly, he has an opportunity to become the fourth man to ride two bulls here prior to Championship Sunday.

Sterling Smith’s arena-record run in tie-down roping last Monday got the Stephenville, Texas, resident $6,557. Smith was successful on his second run and is second in the overall standings.

The eighth performance of the rodeo begins at 12:45 on Saturday. The competition will see the completion of the first and second round of bareback and saddle bronc riding. Horses in those events didn’t perform as expected, so some competitors were awarded re-rides. All the other events will see the completion of the second round. Championship Sunday qualifiers will be determined in all events.
