O’Connell Keeps Winning at Fort Worth Rodeo

FORT WORTH, Texas — Tim O’Connell has won the bareback riding championship at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo for the past two years. He also won world titles in 2016 and 2017.

It’s a trend the Zwingle, Iowa, native hopes will continue. He made it one step closer to seeing that happen on Wednesday. He got on the first two of three horses and scored 79.5 and 86 respectively. His second ride on Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Night Crawler put him on top for the round. He will have his third ride on Thursday and just needs another solid ride to stay here and ride in Saturday’s Championship Finals.

Loni Lester has been coming to the Fort Worth Stock Show for years. She showed cattle here as a youngster before moving over to barrel racing. The Gonzales, Texas, resident is finishing her senior year at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Lester took the lead in the second round with a 16.27-second run riding her nine-year-old mare that she calls Champagne.

Lester is tied for first in the overall standings with Kellie Collier from Hereford, Texas. They both have made two runs that totaled 33.09 seconds. Collier is coming off her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualification and a win here would certainly help her get back to Las Vegas in 2018.

Two former Fort Worth champions had enough success on Wednesday to possibly earn their second Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo buckle. Joel Bach won the team roping here in 2010 roping with Paul Eaves.

This year, he is roping with Shane Philipp. The Texans have a total time of 10.1 on two steers and are tied for first place.

In the bull riding Trevor Kastner, from Roff, Oklahoma made an impression on the fans. Kastner was the champion here in 2012. He moved into third overall after scoring 164.5 points on two bulls. Dustin Bouqet from Bourg, Louisiana, moved into second with 166 points.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo® continues its 100th-anniversary edition Thursday with performances at 2 and 7:30 p.m., in the historic Will Rogers Coliseum.
