Oregon Cowboy Dominating San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo

By Susan Kanode

Austin Foss of Terrebonne, Oregon, has won more money than any other contestant at the 2019 edition of the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo through four brackets of competition. Foss won the second round on Championship Pro Rodeo’s Straight Jacket with an 88-point ride. He also won the first and third rounds. San Antonio Rodeo photo by Greg Westfall.

SAN ANTONIO (Feb.16, 2019) – Austin Foss has been riding bareback horses at the San Antonio Rodeo nearly every year since he joined the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 2012, but he has never left here as the champion.

He is hoping that changes this year and as the high money winner in Bracket 4, he has made a big move in that direction. Foss won all three rounds of competition in the bracket and is the first contestant at the 2019 edition of the rodeo to accomplish that goal. And he bettered his score with each opportunity at 84, 88 and 90.5.

His final ride on Saturday night was aboard Championship Pro Rodeo’s horse named All Pink, one that he was familiar with. He scored 85 points on her in his bracket a year ago and got a second-place check. He put his experience of riding All Pink last year to good use in the AT&T Center Arena this year. After his winning ride Saturday night, he took his third victory lap and collected a total of $7,500. That is more money than any of the other contestants have won here this year so far.

The money will help Foss qualify for San Antonio’s championship finals in one week. At a rodeo that is known for setting new trends all of the bareback riders, saddle bronc riders and bull riders will pick their animals for the finals in a draft. There will be 15 animals for the 10 qualifiers to choose from in each event. Normally, a random draw determines which animal a contestant rides in these events.

The draft will take place at 4 p.m. in the Bud Light Courtyard in front of the AT&T Center. The contestants’ names will be drawn at random and when a name is announced, that contestant will then pick from the available animals.

“I’ve never gotten to do that before. That’s exciting,” Foss said. “When you have a rodeo like this and know how good it’s been there are going to be some great horses to choose from.”

Hailey Kinsel from Cotulla, Texas, is trying to win back-to-back barrel racing championships here. She won the first round, then placed second and won again in the third round. Her 13.84 on Saturday night was the fastest of her three runs and gave her total earnings of $7,000. She earned the championship here a year ago on the way to winning her first world championship. She will be a favorite to advance to next Saturday night’s finals as well.

Sunday will see Bracket 5 having their first two rounds of competition beginning at 1 and then 7:30 p.m.
