Outlaw Fights Through Potential Broken Ribs To Tie For Round 2 Win

By: Justin Felisko

OKLAHOMA CITY – Chase Outlaw slowly tried to exhale seconds after he had just ridden Real Gun for 86.75 points in Round 2 of the Express Ranches Invitational on Saturday night.

The No. 4 bull rider in the world could not hide the screaming pain in his left side as the sweat pouring down his face mixed with his sour grimace.

“I thought I have had broke ribs before I got a broke rib,” Outlaw said later inside the locker room. “It don’t bother you once you crawl into the bucking chute and nod your head. It bothers you when you walk away. This freaking hurts.”

According to Dr. Tandy Freeman, Outlaw may have broken his ribs on his left side Friday night.

Contrary to popular belief, Outlaw explained that he did not sustain the injuries when Night Sweats sent him crashing into the steel bucking chutes inside Chesapeake Energy Arena Friday night in the 15/15 Bucking Battle.

Instead, Night Sweats had actually caught Outlaw with his horn milliseconds before he was bracing for impact.

Outlaw said he will be good to go for the Team USA Eagles for next weekend’s 2019 WinStar World Casino & Resort Global Cup USA, presented by Monster Energy, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

“There is nothing you can do for it,” Outlaw said. “Just ice. Show up and bow up.”

Outlaw tied for the Round 2 victory in Oklahoma City with his USA Eagles teammate Cody Teel.

“There ain’t no one you want on the chute more than Chase Outlaw,” Teel said. “He just pumps you up. He is an intense guy that loves bull riding. If that don’t rub off on you, you aren’t human.”

Teel rode Trail of Tears for 86.75 points.

“That is just a good bull there,” Teel said. “He did what I thought he was. He fumbled, bobbled right around there but thankfully I was able to recover.”

Both riders bucked off their bulls in the championship round.

Teel made it 2.67 seconds aboard Two Point Oh, while Outlaw lasted 7.43 seconds on Rodeo Houston.

It was a strong bounce back performance by both riders after they came down before the 8-second mark in Round 1 on Friday night.

The duo picked up 112.5 points to finish tied for sixth place in the event.

Outlaw is 1,225 points behind world leader and USA Eagles teammate Jess Lockwood (2-for-3) in the standings.

Teel moved up from 43rd to 24th in the standings.

The 26-year-old said it was a good thing for the Eagles to gain some momentum ahead of the Global Cup.

“There is so much talent on the team,” Teel said. “It is just a matter of showing up. With the talent these guys have, the more they show up the more it is going to happen. These guys are so good. It means a lot having momentum. This is bull riding. It feels good. I know when we get in that atmosphere, all the personalities on the team that everybody is going to be feeding off each other.”
