Proctor Seals Team Win at $100,000 Fort Worth Super Shootout® Rodeo

by Johna Cravens
for the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

FORT WORTH, Texas — The fifth edition of the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s tournament-style Super Shootout®, presented by Schaefer, featured a tight race between teams representing eight of North America’s most historic and prestigious rodeos.

Some of the best rodeo athletes in the world compete in five events for a purse that totals $100,000 as well as a $1000 bonus for each winning team member.

Thursday’s event featured champions from each of eight legendary rodeos, including Cheyenne Frontier Days, the Calgary Stampede, Rodeo Houston, the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, the San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo, Rodeo Austin, the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo in Denver, Colo., and the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo®. The champions competed in bareback bronc riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing and bull riding in a tournament format with each rodeo’s team wearing the same colored shirt for easy identification.

First, eight contestants competed in each event, with the top four qualifying for a second round where the winner received a briefcase with $10,000 cash inside. Many of the contestants were current or former world champions and National Finals Rodeo qualifiers and the livestock was among the elite in pro rodeo.

For much of the night it looked as if Rodeo Houston’s three-year run of team titles might be broken by San Angelo. Team members Ryder Wright (saddle bronc riding) and Kassie Mowry (barrel racing) had each won their events’ $10,000 title – giving San Angelo the team lead heading into bull riding, the final competition.

Team Rodeo Houston’s Shane Proctor, former world champion and 2016 National Finals Rodeo champion, was the first bull rider to compete in the championship round. His 86-point ride in the qualifying round was fourth best. The Professional Bull Riders (PBR) veteran scored 88 points on a bull named Bonanza. None of the other three finalists managed to stay aboard their bulls for the required eight seconds, giving Proctor the $10,000 champion’s cash and insuring that Rodeo Houston took home its fourth consecutive team title.

Proctor announced recently that he was returning to full-time PRCA competition and had set a goal of becoming the first rough stock specialist since Ty Murray to win the title of world champion all-around cowboy. That quest continues Friday at Saturday when he is back in Will Rogers Coliseum competing in saddle bronc riding and bull riding at the World’s Original Indoor Rodeo.

Winning team members included barrel racer Mary Walker who had won the Fort Worth Super Shootout for the past four years in a row. Although Walker’s qualifying-round time was fifth-best and left her just out of the championship round, her teammates insured the Ennis, Texas, fan favorite was part of the awards ceremony.

Tyler Waguespack, 2016 World Champion Steer Wrestler, won that event with a time of 3.97 seconds. Mandan, North Dakota’s Ty Breuer finished second in the bareback riding with 87 points. Their efforts, along with Proctor’s win, were enough to seal the team title.

The championship round began with the hometown crowd having plenty to cheer about when Clint Laye of Team Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo rode Korkow Rodeo’s Onion Ring for 90 points. Laye also had the best score of the qualifying round – 89 points.

Officials from the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo® presented each champion with a beautiful hand-tooled briefcase containing $10,000 cash immediately after his or her winning ride or run.

The winning team from Rodeo Houston each received an additional $1,000 and even those cowboys and cowgirls who did not make the championship round received $500 each.

The World’s Original Indoor Rodeo celebrates 100 years of indoor rodeo this year and begins its 29-performance run at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Will Rogers Coliseum.
