Red Bluff, Calif. – The final performance of the Red Bluff (Calif.) Round-Up wrapped up on Sunday, April 17, with eight professional rodeo cowboys and cowgirls taking home the title of 2016 Round-Up champion.

And for a certain horse, it was the second time he had carried a champ to the pay window.

Ty Erickson, Helena, Mont., won the steer wrestling championship with a time of 28.4 seconds on four runs, but he rode a horse who is no stranger to Red Bluff.

“Yellow,” so named for his color, was Ty’s choice of horses today, and last year, was ridden by his owner Tyler Waguespack to win the 2015 steer wrestling title.

Yellow wasn’t the only help Ty got for his run. He came into the finals round in Red Bluff in fifth place, but after Will Stovall and Harley Cole both broke the barrier, adding ten seconds to their times, and Brad McGilchrist failed to make a qualified run, the door was wide open for the Helena, Mont. man. “That’s what happens in these kinds of situations, these short rounds,” Erickson said. “There’s a lot more pressure on guys in short rounds.” But he was quick to point out that his win may have been luck as much as skill. “They had some bad luck today. It went my way today, and that’s rodeo.”

Erickson has competed at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo twice, in 2014 and again last year, and finished the 2015 season in fourth place in the world.

Two other steer wrestlers in addition to Erickson and Waguespack rode Yellow in the short round. Jason Thomas, who won third at the Round-Up, and Timmy Sparing also rode Yellow.

The seventeen-year-old horse is a good fit for a rodeo arena like the Round-Up, Erickson said. “He fits these kinds of set ups like here at Red Bluff because he scores so good. He’s a great horse, a good old honest sucker. He gives you a good go every time.”

In the tie-down roping, Clint Robinson came into the short round in the lead, knowing all he had to do was make a run faster than thirteen seconds to win it. His 11.5 second run wrapped up his win, putting him nearly two seconds ahead in the average over the reserve champion Stetson Vest. Robinson has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals five times, and at age 33, isn’t considering slowing down yet. “I have a few more good years in me, and I’ll try to get a few more (National Finals) qualifications,” he said.

He has competed at the Round-Up nearly every year of his career, and usually his wife and children join him. But his older son, Calder, is in school this year, and they stayed home. “They’ve stayed home more this year, and it’s been challenging, but we make it work.”

Robinson rode fellow tie-down roper Jerrad Hofstetter’s horse for the run. “I had my good horse out here,” he said, “and he was out last year for surgery. The first two rounds, it was a little muddy out here (in the arena), so I didn’t want to ride him. Jerrad was good enough to let me ride his, and it all worked out.”

Barrel racer Taylor Langdon can thank her win in Red Bluff for vaulting her into the world standings.

The Aubrey, Texas cowgirl rounded the barrels in a time of 34.74 seconds on two runs, fifteen-hundredths of a second faster than reserve champion Carley Richardson.

Langdon rode a horse she’s only had since January. Vegas Firefighter, whose barn name is Vegas, is a six year old mare who “loves the rodeos,” Langdon said. “I couldn’t ask for a better partner.”

Vegas has won her owner checks at every rodeo she’s competed at, except for the very first one. They’ve won in Tucson, Ariz., Graham, Texas, and were champions at Logandale, Utah.

Langdon did not plan on rodeoing this year, because her other horse, Bb French Girl, was hurt, and “I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to keep running her this year,” she said. “I thought I was going to stay home.” Vegas has changed all that. “This mare is making dreams come true. She’s been incredible for me.” Langdon’s win of over $2,000 will move her into the top fifteen barrel racers in the world.

Other Red Bluff champions include bareback rider Mason Clements, Sandy, Utah (88 points), saddle bronc rider Samuel Kelts, Millarville, Alberta (84 points), team ropers J.B. James, Jr., Bennett, Colo. and Brock Hanson, Casa Grande, Ariz. (26.5 seconds on four runs), and bull rider Bayle Worden, Charleston, Texas (88.5 points).

During the rodeo, which was the annual Tough Enough to Wear Pink event, a VIP rodeo package was auctioned off. Mueller Trucking of Red Bluff purchased it for $14,000. The package included Wrangler National Finals Rodeo tickets, a two night stay in Las Vegas, a transportation voucher, and more. Monies raised during the Round-Up’s “pink” campaign go to breast cancer treatment at the St. Elizabeth Imaging Center.

Next year’s Red Bluff Round-Up will be held April 21-23, 2017. For more information on the rodeo, visit RedBluffRoundup.com.
