Reno Rodeo Champions Crowned

RENO, NEV.,  — When the dust settled on the 96th annual Reno Rodeo, there were some very happy rodeo contestants heading out of town.

The rodeo, traditionally is the start of the busy summer rodeo season and winning here gives contestants momentum as they head into “Cowboy Christmas,” which includes all of the rodeos held over the Fourth-of-July Holiday.

Steven Peebles, from Redmond, Ore., couldn’t stop smiling after earning the bareback riding title. The six-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) qualifier has had success here in the past, but this is his first set of championship spurs. His win was partly due to an 83-point ride in the final round of competition. He rode the Rosser Rodeo horse named Peppy Bound to place first. He had a total of 237 points on three rides and earned over $10,000.

“I’m so excited to get these spurs,” Peebles said. “This rodeo is one I’ve wanted to win for a long time. It finally happened.”

The 2013 world champion steer wrestler injured his shoulder last year and missed the NFR. He’s on a mission to get back to Las Vegas this year and the $11,704 he won in steer wrestling at the Reno Rodeo will help. Cure was third in the world standings prior to Reno’s rodeo.

Heith DeMoss has watched his older brother Cody earn two sets of spurs and the championship in saddle bronc riding twice. This year, he was leader of the pack and got his own. He had a total score of 241 points on three horses to win $7,594.

Josh Peek from Pueblo, Colo., won his third pair of all-around spurs by earning $9,113 in tie-down roping and steer wrestling. Total payout at this year’s rodeo was $493,123. The Xtreme Bulls competition featured another $47,235 in prize money. Eight out of ten performances, including the finals on Saturday night were sold out with more than 8,200 in attendance.

Plans are already underway for the 97th annual Reno Rodeo will be held June 16 – 27, 2016.
