Rodeo Action Heating Up at National Western Stock Show

By Susan Kanode
For the National Western Stock Show

DENVER, Colo. – With three performances of the rodeo on Saturday at the National Western Stock Show, fans expected to see great rides, lead changes and some surprises too.

They were not disappointed. All three performances saw sold out crowds enjoying Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and Women’s Professional Rodeo Association action.

Saturday night’s bull riding brought down the house when Colorado bull rider Dillon James Tyner lasted the full eight-seconds aboard Summit Pro Rodeo’s Grey Denim. Tyner, who lives about an hour away from the Denver Coliseum, scored 89 points to take the lead in the second round of competition.

The 26-year-old also has a fencing business and rides bulls for fun. He is the bull rider who has had the most fun here so far even though he bucked off of his first bull on Saturday afternoon. None of the bull riders have ridden two bulls through the first six performances, so Tyner is the most successful man in the field so far.

He was one of three men to ride on Saturday night and all three of them scored in the 80-point range. Bart Miller from Pleasanton, Neb., was 85 and Tyler Hessman from Beaver, Okla., scored 82.

In the women’s barrel racing, Emily Miller from Weatherford, Okla., took the lead in the second round with a 15.23 second run. Combined with her first run that she made on Friday night, she has a total of 30.76 seconds on two runs. That is currently second overall behind Jennifer Sharp from Montgomery, Texas, who has a total of 30.63.

Hawkins Boyce from Malad, Idaho, is tied for the lead in the second round of saddle bronc riding. He had his first-round ride Saturday afternoon where he was 78. He followed that up with an 85 on Cervi Brothers Rodeo’s Redial. He is second behind Spencer Wright in the overall standings. Wright has 166 and Boyce has 163.

All of these contestants will be waiting through the next week’s competition to see if they remain in the top 12 to qualify for next Sunday’s Championship Finals.

Sunday, Jan. 20th will see a new group of contestants competing in the first and second rounds. First round competition will be at 2 p.m. followed by the second round at 6:30.
