SAN ANTONIO – The first bracket of competition at the San Antonio Stock Show Rodeo finished up in the AT&T Center on Saturday afternoon.

Bull rider J.W. Harris of Goldthwaite, Texas, won his second consecutive round with an 86-point ride on Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Smoke Wagon. He also won round two on Friday night and finished second in round one on Thursday. He has total earnings here of $7,250, the most of any contestant so far.

That’s important. At San Antonio’s rodeo, contestants advance through the brackets based on how much money they have earned. Not only is Harris leader of the pack going into the semifinals, he is a favorite to go on to the final round on Saturday, Feb. 23rd because of his earnings. He will get on two more bulls in the semifinals, compete at the Xtreme Bulls and if he gets to the finals will get on one more bull there. Harris, as well as the other bull riders here have the opportunity to get on seven bulls in the AT&T Center if they ride well enough to keep advancing.

Two other contestants made their second victory lap on Saturday afternoon. Jacob Talley, from Keathcie, Louisiana, stopped the clock in 3.9 second to win the steer wrestling. Barrel racer Kelly Bruner, of Millsap, Texas, stopped the clock in 13.76 seconds. Both of them won the first and third rounds in Bracket 1 and they each will enter the semifinals with $6,000 earned.

Bracket 2 got underway on Saturday night and featured another exciting section of bull riding. There was a tie at the top of the leaderboard. Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifiers Cole Melancon, from liberty, Texas, and Parker Breding from Edgar, Montana scored 88.5 points to earn $2,250 each. Right behind them was Stetson Wright, from Beaver, Utah with 87.5 to win $1,250.

Rodeo action will continue in the AT&T Center with Bracket 2 having their second round beginning at 1 p.m.
