CHEYENNE, Wyo. — July 22, 2014 — Matt Shiozawa had a lot to smile about as he left Frontier Park on Tuesday.

The Chubbock, Idaho, resident had justfinished his run in tie-down roping stopping the clock in 11.8 seconds to move into second in the second round and take the lead in the overall standings at the 118th Annual Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo. He was heading to rodeos in Utah and is now making plans to be back Sunday afternoon for the finals and have a chance to earn his first title.

“Right now I’m pumped, I’ve never been in this position,” Shiozawa said. “I made the short round (finals) here at least ten years ago. It’s going to be good to run another one in the short-go here.”

Shiozawa’s success here as well as at many other rodeos has come aboard a horse owned by his four-year-old daughter Stella that the family calls Gray Pony. After missing the last year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) competition, he is currently ranked fourth in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) world standings. He is definitely in contention for his first world championship and a big win here would help him achieve that goal.

There were also several other overall lead changes here on Friday. Prior to the rodeo in slack, North Dakota team ropers Preston Billadeau and Jesse Fredrickson took the lead with a total time of 19.5 seconds on two runs. Former NFR qualifier and current college rodeo coach, Stockton Graves, from Alva, Okla., is the fastest man on two head in steer wrestling with a total time of 19.9 seconds.

Cody Wright from Milford, Utah has two gold buckles to his credit as a world champion saddle bronc rider, but he has never earned a title here. Wright had an 81-point ride Friday afternoon on Smith Pro Rodeo’s Pony Man. Combined with his previous score he now has 160 points on two head and is first overall and second in the second round. His youngest brother, Spencer, also from Milford, rode the Smith horse called Goin South for 84. He is one spot above Cody in the second round and one spot behind in the overall standings with 159.

There are now four men who have ridden two bulls here. Austin Meier from Kinta, Okla., leads the overall standings with 167 points. Sage Kimzey, the PRCA world standings leader from Strong City, Okla., is now third behind Tyler Smith, from Fruita, Colo. Smith has 164 and Kimzey has 161. Trey Benton, III, from Rock Island, Texas, is fourth with 158.

The high-marked ride today in bull riding went to Chandler Bownds, from Lubbock, Texas, who is riding with an injured wrist on his riding hand and is depending on the Justin Sportsmedicine Team to get him ready to ride. Bownds rode Smith Harper & Morgan Rodeo’s Pendleton for 90 points and while he bucked off his first round bull, he is fifth in the overall standings based on this score.

Competition continues at the Wrangler Million Dollar Tour rodeo on Wednesday at 12:15. Contestants with the exception of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association barrel racers will be making their first appearance here.
