Spurs Were a Long Time Coming for Reno Rodeo Champion

RENO, NEV.; June 27, 2014 — Monty Joe Petska has been competing in the team roping at the Reno Rodeo for nearly 30 years and while he has won checks along the way, he had yet to win a championship. That changed here on Saturday night as the 95th edition of the Wildest Richest Rodeo of the West came to a close.

Petska, from Turlock, Calif., did the heeling for Tom Richards of Humboldt, Ariz. They had a total time of 17.5 seconds on three runs and each earned $10,647.
“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” Petska said. “I’ve loved coming to this rodeo forever and for sure now it is one of my favorites.”

Kaycee Field and Bradley Harter were the only repeat winners. Field tied for the bareback championship here in 2009, won it in 2012 and again this year. He had a total score of 253 points and collected $10,642. Harter earned his spurs here in 2010 in saddle bronc riding. This year he won the title with 236 points on three rides earning $8,179.

Curtis Cassidy from Donalda, Alberta won the steer wrestling which will be a big boost for his season. He was ranked 20th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association prior to the Reno Rodeo. Taking down three steers in 12.8 seconds earned him $11,297, which should move him into the top 10 in the world standings. He has qualified for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo four times, the last time in 2010. He needs to remain in the top 15 through the end of September to qualify for this year’s championship event in December in Las Vegas. Cassidy also competed in tie-down roping earning the all-around championship as well.

“This is huge,” Cassidy said. “There are rodeos on your bucket list that you want to win and this has always been one of them. It’s definitely a confidence builder and hopefully I’ll keep the momentum going.”

In the tie-down roping it was veteran Trent Walls that had the fastest time on three runs. He had 28.6 to win $9,969. Christine Laughlin from Pueblo, Colo., was the high money winner at $13,453. She had a total time of 51.35 seconds for her first set of spurs. There were no qualified rides in the final round of bull riding, so Idaho’s Zeb Lanham earned the title by virtue of his high score in the first round. His 85-point effort earned him $12,110.
